Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) delivered the opening speech at the Seminar.

Advantages and opportunities for social sciences and humanities students to start a business in the context of digital transformation and globalization.

In the context of the world changing dramatically due to factors such as digital transformation, the Industrial Revolution 4.0, and global issues (climate change, social inequality, cultural conflicts), social innovation has become an important direction to solve urgent social problems. Challenges of inequality, minimizing the negative impact of technology on life and sustainable development are posing urgent requirements for social innovation models. Difficulties in resources, skills and interdisciplinary connectivity are also barriers to developing projects with practical applications. This requires not only the participation of technical or economic sectors but also the contribution of social scientists and humanities, who are able to understand people, culture, and community.
So in that trend, what opportunities are there for graduates from majors in social sciences and humanities to solve the challenges and difficulties that sustainable development is posing? According to Associate Professor, Dr. Do Huong Lan (Director of the Institute of Policy and Management, VNU-USSH), students of social sciences and humanities (KHXH&NV) have many advantages in social innovation startups. These are interdisciplinary thinking and approaches; deep understanding of people and society; analytical and research skills; communication and community connection skills; deep understanding of local culture and identity; the ability to empathize and create social impact;... However, the big challenge for students in this field is limited technological skills as well as lack of foundation and orientation in entrepreneurship and innovation. But the good news is that students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in all majors have access to the subject of entrepreneurship, they are equipped with the most basic thinking, knowledge, tools, and methods about entrepreneurship, and are inspired by many alumni and entrepreneurs who have successfully started their own businesses. Therefore, with the support of the University, businesses, and experts, students of Social Sciences and Humanities will certainly make a good impression in the social innovation startup ecosystem, they can completely become excellent social innovators, contributing positively to the sustainable development of society. Fields such as education, culture, history, media, environment, and community services have great potential to develop startup projects that bring social and economic value.

Areas such as education, culture, media, environment and community services have great potential to develop start-up projects that bring social and economic value.

At the seminar, students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities listened to experts share a lot of useful and interesting information about current career trends as well as analyze job opportunities and suggest start-up projects to promote the strengths of students of Social Sciences and Humanities.
In his report, Mr. Nguyen Duc Vinh (Director of the Center for Research, Consulting and Training on Local Development (STG)) analyzed the concept of ESG standards and pointed out great opportunities for Humanities students.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Vinh (Director of the Center for Research, Consulting and Training on Local Development (STG)
ESG stands forEnvironment(Environment),Social(Society) andGovernance(Governance). This is a set of three standards used to measure the level of sustainable development and the impact of businesses on the community, which plays an important role in the existence and development of businesses, especially if they want to participate in the global market. Therefore, lecturers and students who are well-trained in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities can completely implement research projects on the overview of the current status of ESG in Vietnam, study ESG cases for industries, become consultants and build ESG reports for businesses (content related to Social and Governance). This major is the strength of students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and really opens up very attractive career opportunities in the future if you know how to exploit it.
Representatives of the STG Center are committed to accompanying the School in coordinating training courses on basic knowledge related to ESG, seminars on ESG, coordinating research related to ESG, implementing consulting packages on assessing the current ESG status of businesses and building ESG reports for businesses so that students can be familiar with this field even before graduation.
With the experience of a business that successfully organized a social startup model that brings social and economic value, Mr. Le Quang Binh from ECUE Vietnam Consulting and Services Co., Ltd. shared very interesting things: Why is social startup important in Vietnam? How to create a business model that both creates social impact/changes people's lives and generates revenue and profit? According to Mr. Binh, in reality, there are many urgent social issues such as environment and climate change/extreme weather, gender equality, diversity and social inclusion (GEDSI), migration, waste, pollution, access for people with disabilities, heritage, public space, connecting people with nature in urban areas; poverty, employment, social inequality; population aging; mental health care,… To thoroughly solve this problem, the participation of many sectors is required, especially the research, analysis, and profound interpretation of the social sciences and humanities.

Understanding the difficulties as well as the advantages of students in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities, Mr. Le Quang Binh suggested: to start an idea for a social startup project, students need to choose a social issue that they are interested in and research, actively participate as volunteers for social organizations and businesses, participate in events, forums, connect and build relationships, accumulate practical experience, then join hands and build projects, form working groups, mobilize resources to solve the issues they are interested in. Mr. Binh also shared some outstanding activities of ECUE that VNU-USSH students can fully participate in to both improve their knowledge, practice skills and future job opportunities: Gender training (https://www.facebook.com/VGEMvietnam), Social Entrepreneurship Training, Action Community, Small Fund; register to join volunteer groups (https://www.facebook.com/vimothanoidangson).
With the bold and fresh perspective of a Gen Z CEO, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nhan (Director of the Company for Development and Transfer of the Formula for Building a Pioneering No-code Team in Vietnam) brings the message: Students and young people should start a business whenever they have an idea, because the cost to start a business is very small (even 0 VND), if it fails, it will also bring extremely valuable lessons and experiences, have a global mindset right from the first day of starting a business. In fact, small and medium-sized Start-Ups in Vietnam are known to the world for creating a difference from local knowledge and culture, human resources. So in this field, students majoring in Social Sciences and Humanities are the ones who have the advantage if they really know how to take advantage of and promote what they have been trained and accumulated.
