On April 17, 2015, the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology organized a seminar to introduce newly published books by its members. One of the three books introduced at the seminar was "The Ancient Tay and Thai People in Vietnam" by the late Associate Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Teacher Hoang Luong (former Head of the Department of Ethnology/Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities).

The book "Ancient Tay and Thai People in Vietnam" is a selection of over 40 works from nearly 130 published research papers by Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Luong on Thai culture. This is also the most passionate research topic of this scientist over the past 40 years. Here, one can find studies on toponymy related to the formation and interaction of ancient Vietnamese and ancient Tay communities; the diverse cultural aspects of Thai culture within the multifaceted landscape of ethnic communities in Vietnam; and the diverse ethnic processes in northern Vietnam, which present many challenges in deciphering and leave many scientific questions unanswered...

According to Associate Professor Dr. Lam Ba Nam, the book "Ancient Tay and Thai People in Vietnam" is the culmination of a lifetime of scientific work by Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Luong. Research on the ancient Tay and Thai people is his most in-depth area of ​​study and represents his most significant contributions. In his quest to decipher Thai culture, Dr. Hoang Luong focused his research on the Tay and Thai communities in Vietnam, Southeast Asia, and Southern China. His work has been found in many Thai regions in the area and around the world. He also concentrated on studying ancient Vietnamese culture in the context of the relationship between Vietnamese and Thai cultures. His understanding of the intermingling and shared experiences between these two cultures is a crucial key to his accurate and convincing scientific interpretations.

Associate Professor Lam Ba Nam affirmed that, through his research, Associate Professor Hoang Luong aims to see the flow of Thai culture within the flow of Vietnamese culture.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Suu (Department of Anthropology) also shared: "This book is the lifelong research work of a scientist who has dedicated his entire life to studying Thai culture. As a co-founder of the Thai Studies Program at Hanoi National University and for many years as head of the Department of Ethnology/Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Luong has made many contributions to promoting the study of ethnic groups belonging to the Thai-Kadai language family in Vietnam, and at the same time, building a bridge to integrate Vietnamese Thai studies into the international Thai studies research community. The book helps to affirm his position and contributions as a leading ethnologist and anthropologist in Vietnam, not only to the study of ethnic groups, but also to the development of a new field of study like anthropology in Vietnam."
