From battlefield to classroom

Born in the Nam Dinh countryside with a rich tradition of learning, the dream of being involved in teaching and research came to the young man Pham Ngoc Thanh right from his school days. Like his peers, in July 1971, while he was a second-year student at the University of Culture, student Pham Ngoc Thanh temporarily put aside his books and joined the army, becoming a Truong Son driver of Battalion 58, Division 470, Tay Nguyen Front, Truong Son Command. In 1973, he was injured and had to be treated at the rear, in 1974, he was mobilized to the North, and after the victory of April 30, 1975, soldier Pham Ngoc Thanh was discharged from the army and returned to continue studying at the Faculty of History of Hanoi National University. Graduating with honors and being retained at the school as a lecturer, combined with the qualities and bravery of Uncle Ho's soldiers forged on the battlefield, helped the wounded soldier Pham Ngoc Thanh become a teacher and scientist full of will, determination and optimism, continuing his path of study and scientific research.

For Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh, doing scientific research, especially research on the history of philosophy, politics, culture and management, is both an objective choice and a personal passion. The opportunity to come to these scientific fields that are both close and highly independent, began in 1984. As a young lecturer of the Department of Marxism-Leninism, he was sent by the State to study Philosophy at Yerevan University, Soviet Union. In 1989, after defending his doctoral thesis, he returned to work at the Faculty of Philosophy and was the Head of the Department of Scientific Socialism for many years. Mr. Pham Ngoc Thanh has participated in compiling many textbooks and affirmed his interdisciplinary research capacity by participating in completing many valuable scientific works serving research and teaching such as:History of Philosophy – 3 volumes(Ideology - Culture Publishing House, 1991 - 1992);Scientific socialism,Education Publishing House, 1991 (reprinted many times until 2003),Learn some terms and concepts in Marxist-Leninist theory subjects (Ideology - Culture Publishing House, 1992), History of Philosophy(National Political Publishing House, 1998),History of political thought(National Political Publishing House, 2001), …

Interdisciplinary works

In scientific research, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh is also a great example of the spirit of self-study, self-research and commitment to new fields. With his professional training in Philosophy, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh could have "rest assured" to teach and research in this field. However, he did not stop there. While teaching at the Faculty of Philosophy, he also participated in preparing to build a new field of study. In 2002, when the University of Social Sciences and Humanities established the Department of Management Science (now the Faculty of Management Science), he and many other scientists continued to work on building and perfecting programs, textbooks and lectures to serve the training of management human resources for the country. For many years, as managers of newly established units and moving to new fields of expertise, he directly taught and compiled many lectures and documents with characteristics of the industry such as:Lectures on History of Management Thought, Social Management of Education, Management Culture and Ethics, Politics and Social Management, Political Philosophy...With the inherent perspective of a scientist, both general in philosophy and specific in management science, he has studied the relationship between culture and social management in a very vivid and profound way. With such a stream of thinking, in recent years, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh has presided over 6 scientific research topics, is a member of many major research topics and projects, and has published more than 35 articles on related topics in specialized scientific journals and national and international conferences. In particular, he has been assigned by the State to preside over 2 state-level scientific research topics:Innovation in leadership and management culture in Vietnam today(State-level project KX.03.21/06-10 implemented in 2009-2010 under the State-level key scientific research program), andSocial development issues and social development management in the Central Highlands(State-level topic. Code TN3/X07, under the State-level key scientific program). The research results of these two topics have contributed to providing many scientific arguments for the Party and State to perfect the current management mechanisms and policies in our country. At the same time, the research results of the professor have contributed to enhancing the position of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi in scientific research. Through these research activities, a strong enough interdisciplinary research group has been formed to complete major topics, train many young scientists, create links with many scientists in many different agencies and local practitioners.

Stick with the field of Cultural Management

He is Deputy Head of the Faculty of Management Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (2002-2012), Head of the Department of Management Theory and Methods, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (2007 to present).

Along with scientific research, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh is also very interested in transferring research results to human resource training. His efforts are demonstrated through scientific works such as:Current issues of cultural and human development(co-author, Books as Worlds, 2011);Innovation in leadership and management culture - Theory and practice(editor,PublisherLabor, 2011);Innovation in leadership and management culture in Vietnam today(editor,Books likeNational Politics, 2013). Not only that, more than 45 graduate students have successfully defended their master's thesis, 01 doctoral student has defended his doctoral thesis, 03 doctoral students are being supervised by him, ... are the clearest evidence of his efforts in training high-quality human resources of the School. Many colleagues, students, graduate students, and postgraduate students who have been supervised and inspired by him in their studies and scientific research have become independent scientists, talented managers in many fields and in many different localities across the country.

Having been involved in teaching and scientific research at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for many years, when talking about future plans, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh shared:"The field of management culture is still a new field and management practice is posing many urgent issues that need to be clarified in the process of national development. In the coming time, my priority will still be this field, but I will delve into specific issues of organizations in different fields and localities. On the other hand, I also pay more attention to leadership culture and leadership ethics. Thereby, attracting the attention of lecturers, young scientists, students and postgraduates to follow in my footsteps in researching management culture. That is my wish."
