As part of the Welcome Freshmen activities organized by the Youth Union and Student Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, The Face USSH 2021 marks a groundbreaking transformation amidst the complex situation of the Covid-19 pandemic. From a familiar-style student beauty contest, The Face USSH has become the first online reality show at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, with all organizational steps conducted 100% online via video calling software and livestreaming systems on social media.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Anh - Vice President of the Student Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU Hanoi, representing the Organizing Committee of the competition, said: “Given the complex situation of the pandemic, students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities have been studying online for more than 6 months. Therefore, throughout this time, the University's Youth Union and Student Union have converted all activities and movements to online formats, and The Face USSH 2021 competition, part of the 'Taking Flight - Welcoming New Students K66 USSH' series of activities, is no exception and must take place online. The difference and special thing is that this is the first time the youth of the university have had such a long-term online program, lasting more than 2 months. This is also the first time a student beauty contest at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has been organized in a format similar to many famous reality TV shows such as The Face Online and The Next Face.”

Nong Huyen Thuong, a Top 12 contestant with contestant number 161, shared her experience after participating in the program: “This is my first time participating in a competition with such a unique format, and I found it very novel and interesting. I also feel a little regretful that I didn't get to meet everyone in person and stand on stage, but it's okay because organizing it online during this pandemic will be safer.”
“This year’s competition is truly special compared to previous years. Besides having to compete 100% online, I find the competition segments of The Face USSH 2021 very new and unique. This is also one of the reasons why I decided to participate in the program,” said Trinh Cong Minh, a Top 12 contestant from the K65 Political Science program.
Due to the nature of the program, contestants, mentors, judges, and organizers only need to connect via phone or computer screens to take the exam and participate in activities on-site. Although this online format offers many conveniences, it still has some limitations.

Trinh Cong Minh believes that the lack of connection with others during the competition was one of his biggest challenges. Minh believes, "Spending time to interact and get to know the other contestants better helps me build stronger bonds and understand each other's personalities more effectively."

For Nong Huyen Thuong, the difficulty lay in the consecutive online meetings to prepare for the competition. There was a time when Thuong almost missed an appointment, but luckily she managed to join the meeting on time. At that moment, "I was both worried and relieved to have made it to the meeting," Thuong said.
Because participating in a reality show, especially one that's 100% online, requires a lot of time, the Top 12 contestants gradually found ways to balance the competition, their studies, and other personal commitments.
La Duong Lieu chose to sacrifice her weekend time, saying, "I know it's difficult to balance studying and participating in extracurricular activities. Therefore, I work twice as hard as usual, arranging my time scientifically to minimize the impact on my studies."

“Regarding work-life balance, I’m still quite concerned,” Doan Thi Duyen, contestant number 150, continued, “I always try to finish my assignments as early as possible to focus on preparing for the competition, so I don’t get distracted while doing each task. I’ve become more confident in the later rounds, but I still need to work harder to balance the competition and my studies.”

It's safe to say that the contestants' journey to the final round was not easy. However, through that journey, they demonstrated their growth and positive changes, laying the groundwork for ultimately winning the competition.
Regarding the upcoming final round, the Top 12 representatives all shared the same answer: promising exciting performances that will convey meaningful humanistic values, showcasing the dynamic, talented, and enthusiastic image of students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Anh, representing the organizing committee, shared about the final stages of the program: “Currently, the organizing committee and the Top 12 contestants are rushing to complete preparations for the Grand Finale with the highest determination, hoping to bring an explosive and visually stunning Grand Finale for the audience. Besides the unique format with catwalk, talent, and Q&A segments at 12 studio locations nationwide, The Face USSH 2021 Grand Finale will also feature experienced guest judges in the beauty and other fields, such as: Miss Congeniality - Top 5 Miss Vietnam 2020: Huynh Nguyen Mai Phuong; TV/MC Tran Hanh Phuc; and mentors: Miss Congeniality - Top 10 Miss Universe Vietnam 2019: Luong Y Nhu; Mr. Universe Earth 2019 - Vu Hieu Duc; and the winner of Vietnam Fitness Model 2019 - Dat Kyo.”
The grand finale of The Face USSH 2021 is scheduled to be livestreamed at 8:00 PM on December 12, 2021, on the program's official fanpage: "Taking Flight - Welcoming New USSH Students" and will include costume presentations, talent competitions, and Q&A sessions.
