The final round of the Youth Innovation Competition on Lancang-Mekong Region's Governance 2023 (YICMG 2023) was successfully held from July 19-23 at Qinghai University, Xining City, Qinghai Province, China.
This is an annual competition with the aim of encouraging young people to come up with practical ideas to solve ongoing problems in the Mekong - Lancang region.
The theme of YICMG 2023 is “New Agriculture and Food Safety & Security”. The competition has the participation of 20 projects from 6 countries in the Mekong - Lancang region, including: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, China and Vietnam. Of which, there are 4 projects by Vietnamese students from Hanoi National University and Diplomatic Academy.

The project won the highest award - “The Best Project for Incubation” at YICMG 2023 with a prize worth 10,000 yuan (over 30 million VND).

Ngoc Lan shared with the Vietnamese Student page of Tien Phong newspaper: “Currently, the sugarcane growing area in the Mekong Delta is gradually decreasing, because people do not see many economic benefits from sugarcane. This is one of the reasons leading to the sugar crisis in Vietnam.
The project aims to recycle sugarcane leaves - a type of agricultural waste, turning sugarcane leaves that are usually just thrown away or used for roofing into packaging, writing paper, painting, etc., helping to increase farmers' income. Reducing agricultural waste and encouraging people to continue growing sugarcane are the two main goals of this project.
The group confidently presented their project (pictured above) and announced the highest award - The Best Project for Incubation.
After receiving information from the competition in November 2022, the three female students proactively formed a group and urgently searched for ideas suitable for the topic. Because it was also the time for mid-term exams for school subjects, the whole group worked hard and urgently to submit the project report to the organizing committee on time.
Because all three of you are students of the K65 International Studies class, you have similar study schedules and a certain understanding. Thanks to that, when dividing tasks, each member is given the opportunity to best develop their abilities.
“One of the difficulties for the group is to determine and ensure the feasibility of the project, in order to increase the ability to convince the judges,” Tra My said.
The group also received a lot of help and support from the teachers in the Faculty and seniors who participated in YICMG in previous years. To have a complete project to bring to the final round, the group received enthusiastic advice from Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hong Hanh, Head of the Department of European Studies, Faculty of International Studies.

The idea of the project is to utilize agricultural waste to create a product with more value: producing paper from sugarcane leaves, thereby increasing the income of sugarcane farmers and building a circular economic model in agriculture.
After 4 days of competition, the group of students from the Faculty of International Studies achieved impressive results: The project “Sugarcane leaves: New value – New chance” won the highest award “The Best Project For Incubation”.
