For the past twenty years, every year at the end of April, when the streets of the capital are ablaze with red flags, celebrating the complete liberation of South Vietnam, amidst the general joy, I feel a profound sadness. This sadness is linked to the memory of a comrade who left Hanoi University to fight. He went to the battlefield with the aspiration of becoming a poet, but his dream remained unfulfilled as he perished. Why? Because he was living and adhering to the logic of reality: the nation needed heroes before it needed poets.

“Mom! Why is it called Ben Vuot?” The mother remained silent, not answering. Everyone else was silent too. Perhaps one of the people who had fallen at Ben Vuot, or perhaps the father of the young mother, the grandfather of the innocent child, lay beneath the river.

From July 11th to 15th, 2012, a group of veterans from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi, embarked on a meaningful "homecoming": a trip to the ancient citadel of Quang Tri and the Truong Son National Martyrs' Cemetery. This return was even more significant as, in 2012, the entire nation solemnly commemorated the 81-day and 81-night battle at the citadel, a historical turning point in our nation's resistance war against the US. Associate Professor Pham Thanh Hung - Vice Dean of the Faculty of Literature, a student of the 15th cohort of the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature - was one of hundreds of students from Hanoi University who donned military uniforms and went to the front lines to fulfill their civic duty when the country was under enemy attack. Even now, the impression of the ferocity and tragedy of war remains in his heart as a lingering, unceasing sorrow…

To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Day of War Invalids and Martyrs (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2012), on July 26, 2012, the Executive Committee of the Trade Union and the Veterans Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) organized a visit and presented gifts to the Center for the Care of Severely Injured and Sick Soldiers in Liem Can Commune (Thanh Liem District - Ha Nam Province) and the Center for the Rehabilitation of Severely Injured and Sick Soldiers in Nho Quan District (Ninh Binh Province). This is a deeply meaningful humanitarian activity that the University organizes annually to express gratitude for the contributions and sacrifices of war invalids and sick soldiers.
