Currently, there is still confusion regarding the choice of spelling in Vietnamese (Quốc ngữ script).i shortandlongIn some cases, specifically when the /i/ sound acts as the main vowel in an open syllable (without a final consonant) following the consonants /h, k, l, m, s, t/. Therefore, two spellings still exist.

In remembrance of Professor Nguyen Tai Can, we present to you the following story, written by Associate Professor Vu Duc Nghieu on the occasion of Professor Nguyen Tai Can's eightieth birthday, published in the Hanoi National University Newsletter in 2006, to provide you with some further insight into the Professor.

On March 2nd, 2011, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a meeting with the National Assembly's survey team to gather feedback on the second draft of the Law on Higher Education.

During his visit and working trip to several Australian universities on February 25, 2011, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh signed a cooperation agreement with the University of South Australia.

Endless passion

Then the teacher appeared. An old overcoat, a shawl wrapped around his neck, a huge rolled cigarette clenched between his teeth. His first words were: “Hello, students! It’s freezing. It’s so cold it’s deafening. Unbearable. Indescribable… Do you see the difference? That’s language!” Then he enthusiastically analyzed the differences between the utterances. First, his dusty overcoat was piled on the table, then his jacket was thrown onto the back of the chair, and beads of sweat dotted his parted, graying hair. Then he suddenly changed direction: “That’s vocabulary, that’s grammar, but today we’re going to learn phonetics, a difficult but very interesting subject. The world began with words. The Bible says so.” Suddenly, he put his hand to his neck, his mouth wide open, his tongue sticking out, his nose wrinkled, his eyebrows raised. He introduced us to the vocal apparatus. With a few strokes on the blackboard, we understood what makes up the sounds of speech, the A, E, O, U, B, M, D… Four lessons flew by in a flash.

Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher Nguyen Tai Can

Born on May 2nd, 1926, in Thanh Van commune, Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An province; recipient of the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology; recipient of the 60-Year Party Membership Badge; former Head of the Linguistics Department at Hanoi University; recipient of the First Class Labor Medal and the First Class Anti-American Resistance Medal; due to old age and ill health, he passed away at his home in Moscow, Russian Federation at 3:10 PM (7:10 PM Hanoi time) on February 25th, 2011 (the 23rd day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Rabbit), at the age of 85.

With funding from the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS), the Center for Asian Studies Support, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, announces funding for science and technology activities in 2011.

On February 24, 2011, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held the first master's degree awarding ceremony for 95 graduate students from 12 disciplines. Of these, 44 students from the QH-2007-X cohort successfully defended their theses on time, and 7 students from the QH-2008-X cohort successfully defended theirs ahead of schedule.

Professor Tatsuru Akimoto – Vice President of the International Association of Schools of Social Work – visited and worked with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities on February 23, 2011. Receiving Professor Tatsuru Akimoto were Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Kim Son – Vice Rector of the University – along with representatives from the Faculty of Sociology and the Department of Social Work.

On February 21, 2011, Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu - Vice Rector of the University - along with representatives from the Faculty of Oriental Studies, held a meeting and working session with a delegation from Valaya Alongkorn University.

A scientific workshop on the theme "Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in Vietnam after joining the World Trade Organization - WTO" was jointly organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Konrad Adenauer Institute on February 21-22, 2011.
