Scientific workshop with the theme "Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in Vietnam after joining the World Trade Organization - WTO" co-organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Konrad Adenauer Institute on February 21-22, 2011.Attending the workshop were Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu - Vice Rector of the University, Mr. Amos R. Helms - Chief Representative of the Kornad Adenauer Institute in Vietnam, Mr. Hoang Van Tan - Deputy Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, representatives of Vietnamese and international scientists... The workshop focused on clarifying one of the most concerned issues in recent times, which is disputes related to intellectual property protection rights. In his opening speech, Vice Rector Vu Duc Nghieu emphasized: Since 2001, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has received active cooperation and very effective support from the Konard Adenauer Institute to organize many workshops with the main theme of Social Market Economy and Vietnam's WTO Accession Process. Today's workshop, in addition to inheriting the successes achieved, also opens up new research contents, reflecting the changes that have been taking place in Vietnam, especially after Vietnam became the 150th member of the World Trade Organization in 2007. From specific examples related to intellectual property rights in Germany and the European Union, internationality - one of the most important and difficult challenges for intellectual property protection - was presented by Prof. Ansgar Staudinger (Faculty of Law, Bielefeld University - Federal Republic of Germany) in the report: "Enforcement of intellectual property rights in Germany/European Union". Prof. Ansgar said: to make laws on intellectual property is relatively simple, but which mechanism can be used in each country or national union is still a big problem. And the issue of intellectual property rights enforcement in Vietnam is also one of the big issues mentioned by most reports. Many examples of intellectual property rights enforcement in Vietnam have been discussed by scientists such as: the report "Case No. DS 362 between China and the United States on measures affecting the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights and experience for Vietnam" by Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Phuoc Hiep (Ministry of Justice), "Resolving conflicts between trademarks and trade names in the process of intellectual property rights enforcement" - Master. Nguyen Van Bay (Department of Intellectual Property). Dr. Tran Van Hai and Master. Tran Diep Thanh (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) focused on discussing the issue: "Intellectual property training in universities - from the experience of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities". The two authors emphasized: International experience in intellectual property rights enforcement shows that in countries where the public's awareness of intellectual property is higher, the rate of intellectual property rights violations is lower and that is the driving force for socio-economic growth. There are many ways to raise public awareness of intellectual property, in which intellectual property training in universities is an important channel. Realizing the country's requirements for intellectual property, in 2003, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities completed and introduced the Intellectual Property Law and Practice program, and in 2005 began training bachelors of Management Science specializing in Intellectual Property. And many other activities: establishing the Department of Intellectual Property and proactively training lecturers, actively promoting intellectual property... In addition, related to intellectual property, the issue of copyright and related rights has also received attention from participants, with many opinions given. On this issue: Dr. Nguyen Thi Que Anh (Faculty of Law, VNU) pays special attention to the role of the State in enforcing copyright and related rights. According to the PhD, State management and regulation tools need to be exploited and used thoroughly and effectively to create a solid foundation for the exploitation of intellectual property assets. This workshop has contributed to clarifying the issue of intellectual property rights enforcement not only to meet international standards but also to help Vietnam promote the development of domestic science and technology, creating a more favorable environment to attract more investors.
