The Scientific and Training Council of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for the term 2009–2014 held its third meeting on the morning of January 22, 2011, chaired by Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Rector of the University. The council members listened to and discussed important issues related to the University's future development direction. Specifically, three reports were presented: 1. Building and enhancing the effectiveness of research groups at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, presented by Dr. Hoang Van Luan, Head of the Scientific Research Management Department. 2. Solutions for building and developing several disciplines/specializations to achieve international standards, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Quyet and Dr. Tran Ngoc Lieu. 3. Some solutions for training a faculty to meet international standards, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Xuan Khang, Head of the Personnel Department. All reports clearly outlined immediate and long-term solutions to develop, enhance the competitiveness and prestige of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and transform it into a research university, ranking among the top 200 universities in the region. Regarding the building and development of strong research groups at the university, Dr. Hoang Van Luan proposed that, in the first quarter of 2011, the University would implement the consolidation and registration of research groups with specific information such as: the name of the research group, the name of the research group leader and members, and the main research directions (accompanied by the scientific resumes of the group leader and members, along with the minutes of the research group's meetings). In the second quarter, the University President would review and issue regulations and standards for the operation of research groups, and consider and decide on the establishment of research groups. From June 2011, research groups would propose research tasks for 2012, and it is expected that at the end of December 2011, a summary of one year of promoting the establishment of research groups at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities would be held. Regarding improving the quality of training, the representative of the Training and Postgraduate Training Department suggested that the University continue to select, develop, and promote a number of majors/specializations to achieve international standards. Specifically, at the undergraduate level, the programs offered are Clinical Psychology and Southeast Asian Studies, while at the postgraduate level, they specialize in Modern and Contemporary Vietnamese History, Tourism and Hotel Management, Public and Business Management, Science and Technology Management, and International Studies. It is known that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has currently developed and is implementing three internationally recognized training programs: an undergraduate program in Linguistics, a master's program in Vietnamese History, and a doctoral program in Ancient and Medieval Vietnamese History. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Xuan Khang presented the draft criteria for internationally qualified lecturers and professional management staff at Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and outlined several specific solutions to promote the standardization of lecturers, the planning and development of leading scientific staff, the enhancement of foreign language proficiency for lecturers, and the training of leadership and management skills for professional management staff. In the second part of the session, the council heard and discussed the Report on the Proposal to Establish the Faculty of Political Science, presented by Prof. Dr. Phung Huu Phu - Head of Department. The heartfelt speeches at the conference by Prof. Nguyen Kim Dinh, Prof. Dinh Van Duc, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Quoc Hung, Prof. Dr. Le Van Quan, Assoc. Prof. Pham Xanh, and Prof. Ha Minh Duc once again affirmed the importance of improving the quality of training, research, and especially the quality of the teaching, research, and professional management staff at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. At the end of the session, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh summarized the main contents of the conference, while emphasizing the key tasks for 2011 and subsequent years to make the University of Social Sciences and Humanities a prestigious research university in the region. On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2011 (Year of the Rabbit), on behalf of the Party Committee and the School's Board of Directors, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh extended New Year greetings and expressed gratitude to the veteran teachers who have contributed significantly to the development of the School over the years.
