At the opening ceremony of the 2012-2013 school year held on September 14, 2012, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was honored to welcome the presence of Comrade Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Truong Tan Sang highly appreciated the long tradition and great contributions of the University to the country's science, education and training, affirming: "The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has gone through a long journey of continuous efforts to become a leading training and research center in the country, with prestige in the region and the world in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities. The academic level and training quality of the University have won the trust of society and are highly appreciated by international friends and colleagues."

The President suggested that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities must be the leading unit, actively and effectively implementing the Party's resolutions, so that education and training can truly be the top national policy, the driving force for the country's rapid and sustainable development.
Then, on February 27, 2013, Minister Pham Vu Luan and the delegation of the Ministry of Education and Training had a working session at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Regarding the opinions of professors and scientists of the University, the Minister said that he would accept them and, on that basis, propose a specific mechanism to promote worthy and appropriate development for the Social Sciences and Humanities sector in Vietnam.
The visit and working session of the Head of State and the Ministry of Education and Training showed the increasingly deep interest of the Party and State in the role and position of Social Sciences and Humanities as well as the high appreciation of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities as a leading training center in Social Sciences and Humanities, a pioneering, creative and innovative place in disseminating knowledge.
In 2012-2013, the University's scientific staff successfully bid for 12 scientific topics at the State and Protocol levels. This is a great success in scientific research activities so far. There are 3 scientific works of teachers winning the 2012 VNU Outstanding Scientific Work Award.
This achievement is the result of innovation in leadership, direction, organization of scientific research activities, and promotion of intellectual resources of the faculty, researchers, and experts in the University. In addition, the way and thinking of organizing scientific research activities of the staff and scientists in the University have also increasingly changed positively in a more practical and dynamic direction, and have promoted the role of strong research groups as well as leading experts. With this success, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has demonstrated its increasingly strong participation and position in major research programs, thereby advising Party and State agencies on many policies related to human, cultural, and social development.
The international scientific conference “Paris Agreement 1973: 40 years in retrospect” held on January 17, 2013 attracted the attention and participation of many domestic and international scholars and witnesses of this event.
Continuing the policy of expanding training majors and specialties to meet social needs as well as the internal development needs of scientific fields, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has opened a number of new training majors and specialties at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These include: establishing the Department of Event Management at the Faculty of Tourism Studies (May 27, 2013); the Public Relations major trained at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication was first enrolled in 2013; training Masters in Anthropology, Masters in Theory, History and Criticism of Cinema and Television; training PhDs in Vietnamese History, PhDs in Science and Technology Management. Up to now, the University has 23 undergraduate training programs and 54 postgraduate training programs.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa (Vice Principal, Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies) presented the project to establish the Department of Event Management under the Faculty of Tourism Studies at the 7th meeting of the Science and Training Council of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The University's position in foreign relations has been increasingly enhanced through the signing and implementation of cooperation with a series of large and prestigious universities in the region and the world such as: Mahidol University (Thailand), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Brigham Young University (USA), University of Johannesburg (South Africa), University of Politics, University of Education (Taiwan), Korean Cultural Heritage University, University of Glasgow (UK), Meiji University (Japan); funds and corporations such as: Aeon Group (Japan), Friedrich - Ebert Stiftung Foundation (Germany)... Many large international cooperation programs implemented in both the fields of training and scientific research have helped open up new opportunities for scientists, students, and postgraduates to improve their qualifications and integrate deeply with the international scientific and university community.

On November 9, 2012, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a ceremony to celebrate the 15th World Social Work Day with the theme “Social work for the happiness of every family”.
Attending the ceremony were Ms. Pham Thi Hai Chuyen (Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs); Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang (former Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, President of the Vietnam Vocational Training Association); Mr. David Sheer, US Ambassador to Vietnam.
At the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Social Work major was officially introduced in 2006. Since 2011, with the approval of Hanoi National University, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has enrolled students for the Master's program in Social Work. Both the university's bachelor's and master's programs have attracted hundreds of students and trainees. Most recently, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has signed a cooperation agreement with San Jose State University (USA) to implement a project to promote social work training in Vietnam.
The celebration of World Social Work Day 2012 held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is an opportunity to look back on the development of the social work profession, at the same time to recognize and honor the values of this profession, and is an opportunity for social workers to meet, exchange and share experiences, promote and promote social work training programs in universities and colleges nationwide.
A delegation from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU) led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (Rector) attended the Vietnam-US Dialogue Forum on Religious Freedom in Washington DC on June 19, 2013.
The forum was co-organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Vietnamese Embassy in the United States, the Institute for Global Engagement, and Brigham Young University (USA). The forum attracted the participation of many scholars and international guests, religious organizations, non-governmental organizations, and domestic and foreign news agencies. Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Cuong attended and delivered the opening speech at the forum.
Professor Nguyen Van Khanh, representing the University, signed a memorandum of cooperation between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Brigham Young University and the Institute for Global Engagement (USA) in the presence of the Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States.
In his speech, the School Principal affirmed: The School always pays attention and supports objective cooperation projects, with the goodwill of sincere and open dialogue on religion, aiming to promote the training and research career in the fields of social sciences and humanities of Vietnam in particular and contribute to the economic, cultural, social development and international integration in general.
Within the framework of the forum, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh signed a cooperation agreement between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Brigham Young University and the Institute for Global Engagement (USA) in the presence of the Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States.
The 4th International Scientific Conference on the International Forum for Development of the Red River Basin with the theme “Economic and cultural cooperation, environmental protection and sustainable tourism development in the Red River Basin” was organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Lao Cai Department of Culture and Tourism and the Honghe Academy (China) on November 9 and 10, 2012 in Lao Cai province.
The workshop focused on two main contents: the current status of research and development cooperation in the Red River basin; some solutions to promote research cooperation to promote exchange activities in the Red River basin.
The presentations in this workshop discussed many aspects, most of which focused on the exploitation and conservation of cultural values and natural landscapes for sustainable tourism; at the same time, it emphasized the need to pay attention to inter-regional and inter-sectoral development, balance between exploitation and conservation, between immediate and long-term benefits, between development and sustainable development, improve human resources for tourism and develop sustainable tourism in some localities in Northern Vietnam and Southwest China.
After the workshop, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lao Cai province and Hong Ha Academy (China) and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU) coordinated to implement a number of joint research programs such as: Program for sustainable tourism development in the Red River basin, Program for cultural research of ethnic groups in border areas...
On April 16, 2013, the Institute of Policy and Management was established on the basis of upgrading the Center for Policy Research and Analysis, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Institute has the function and task of researching and training human resources for management and experts in policy science and management. With the slogan "Proposing ideas - Perception - Innovation" (Think tank - Perception - Innovation), the Institute focuses on creating and applying, linking and gathering a network of policy organizations in Vietnam.
The establishment of the Institute of Policy and Management will make an important contribution to the development of the Department of Policy Analysis and Policy Planning at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, contributing to improving the capacity and skills of human resources in the field of policy science and management, especially science and education management in Vietnam.
The 6th Congress of the Vietnam Student Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities took place on March 16, 2013 with the participation of 195 student delegates. The conference listened to and discussed the Summary Report of the Association's work and student movement in the 5th term (2010-2013) and the direction of work in the 6th term (2013-2015).
During the 6th term, the Student Association of the University determined to make efforts to diversify activities to promote, arouse ambitions and ideals in students; proactively and creatively implement club forms to improve life skills, integration capacity, professional qualifications, foreign languages, learning and research methods; contribute to orienting the building of a unique style and identity of students of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities; and at the same time develop the staff of the Association at all levels.
The Congress approved the direction and tasks of the Association's work and the student movement for the 6th term with the slogan of action "Creation - Connection - Reaching out".
On July 11, 2013, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a handover ceremony for the in-depth investment project to build a training center for journalism and communication from VNU and a signing ceremony for cooperation with the Vietnam Journalists Association.
The in-depth investment project to build a training center for journalism and communication was implemented in 3 years (2010-2012) at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to equip the school with a synchronous and modern infrastructure system for journalism training, including a studio, editing rooms, recording studios, online newspaper rooms, print newspapers, photo newspapers, etc., meeting standards equivalent to many current press agencies. The project has created opportunities for the Faculty of Journalism and Communication and the Center for Journalism and Communication to improve their capacity for training journalism skills.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Kim and Mr. Ha Minh Hue signed the official cooperation agreement between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Vietnam Journalists Association.
On this occasion, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Vietnam Journalists Association signed an official memorandum of cooperation. The signing of the cooperation agreement between the country's leading journalism training institution and a large political, social and professional organization of twenty thousand journalists nationwide is expected to bring about positive changes in journalism training activities as well as professional activities of journalists in the future.
