At the opening ceremony of the 2012-2013 academic year held on September 14, 2012, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was honored to welcome Comrade Truong Tan Sang, Member of the Political Bureau and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Truong Tan Sang highly appreciated the long tradition and significant contributions of the University to the country's science, education, and training, affirming: "The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has gone through a long journey of continuous striving to become a leading training and research center in the country, with prestige in the region and the world in the fields of social sciences and humanities. The academic level and quality of training of the university have earned the trust of society and are highly appreciated by international friends and colleagues."
Professor Nguyen Van Khanh presented a commemorative gift from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to President Truong Tan Sang at the opening ceremony of the 2012-2013 academic year.
The President requested that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities should be a leading institution, actively and effectively implementing the Party's resolutions, so that education and training truly become a top national priority and a driving force for the rapid and sustainable development of the country.
Subsequently, on February 27, 2013, Minister Pham Vu Luan and a delegation from the Ministry of Education and Training held a working session at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Regarding the opinions exchanged by the professors and scientists of the University, the Minister stated that he would take them into consideration and, based on that, propose a specific mechanism to promote the worthy and appropriate development of the social sciences and humanities in Vietnam.
The visit and working session of the Head of State and the Ministry of Education and Training demonstrated the Party and State's growing interest in the role and position of social sciences and humanities, as well as their high regard for the University of Social Sciences and Humanities as a leading training center in social sciences and humanities, a pioneering and innovative institution in the dissemination of knowledge.
In 2012-2013, the university's scientific staff successfully bid for 12 state-level scientific research projects and protocols. This was a major achievement in scientific research activities to date. Three scientific works by faculty members won the Outstanding Scientific Work Award of Vietnam National University, Hanoi in 2012.
This achievement is the result of innovation in leadership, guidance, and the organization of scientific research activities, leveraging the intellectual resources of the faculty, researchers, and experts within the University. Furthermore, the methods and thinking behind organizing scientific research activities by the University's staff and scientists have increasingly shifted towards a more practical and dynamic approach, enhancing the role of strong research groups and leading experts. With this success, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities demonstrates its increasingly strong participation and position in major research programs, thereby advising Party and State agencies on many policies related to human development, culture, and society.
The international scientific conference "The 1973 Paris Agreement: 40 Years Later," held on January 17, 2013, attracted the attention and participation of numerous domestic and international scholars and witnesses to the event.
Continuing its policy of expanding training programs and specializations to meet societal needs as well as the internal development needs of the scientific fields, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has opened several new undergraduate and postgraduate training programs. These include: establishing the Department of Event Management in the Faculty of Tourism Studies (May 27, 2013); the Public Relations program, offered in the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, which began admitting students in 2013; Master's programs in Anthropology, Film and Television Theory, History and Criticism; and Doctoral programs in Vietnamese History and Science and Technology Management. To date, the University has 23 undergraduate and 54 postgraduate programs.
Associate Professor Tran Thi Minh Hoa (Vice Rector, Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies) presented the proposal to establish the Department of Event Management under the Faculty of Tourism Studies at the 7th session of the Scientific and Training Council of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The University's position in international relations has been increasingly enhanced through the signing and implementation of cooperation agreements with a series of large and prestigious universities in the region and the world, such as: Mahidol University (Thailand), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Brigham Young University (USA), University of Johannesburg (South Africa), National Chengchi University, National Taiwan Normal University (Taiwan), Korea University of Cultural Heritage, University of Glasgow (UK), Meiji University (Japan); and foundations and corporations such as: Aeon Group (Japan), Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung Foundation (Germany)... Many large-scale international cooperation programs have been implemented in both training and research, opening up new opportunities to help scientists, students, and postgraduate students improve their skills and integrate more deeply with the international scientific and university community.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Vice Rector) signed a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Literature and Arts - Mahidol University (Thailand) on May 27, 2013.
On November 9, 2012, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities organized a ceremony to celebrate the 15th World Social Work Day with the theme "Social Work for the Happiness of Every Family".
Attending the ceremony were Ms. Pham Thi Hai Chuyen (Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs); Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang (former Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, President of the Vietnam Vocational Training Association); and Mr. David Sheer, US Ambassador to Vietnam.
At the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Social Work major was officially introduced in 2006. Since 2011, with the approval of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has offered a Master's program in Social Work. Both the undergraduate and Master's programs have attracted hundreds of students and trainees. Most recently, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities signed a cooperation agreement with Sanjosé State University (USA) to implement a project promoting social work training in Vietnam.
The 2012 World Social Work Day celebration, held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, was an opportunity to reflect on the development of the social work profession, while also recognizing and honoring its values. It was also a chance for social workers to meet, network, and exchange experiences, and to promote and advance social work training programs in universities and colleges nationwide.
A delegation from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), led by Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (Rector), attended the Vietnam-US Dialogue Forum on Religious Freedom in Washington DC on June 19, 2013.
The forum was co-organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Vietnamese Embassy in the United States, the Institute for Global Engagement, and Brigham Young University (USA). The forum attracted a large number of international scholars and guests, religious organizations, non-governmental organizations, and domestic and foreign news agencies. Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Cuong attended and delivered the opening remarks.
Professor Nguyen Van Khanh, representing the University, signed the cooperation agreement between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Brigham Young University, and the Institute for Global Engagement (USA) in the presence of the Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States.
In his speech, the Rector affirmed that the University always pays attention to and supports objective cooperation projects, with a sincere and open dialogue on religion, aiming to promote the training and research in the social sciences and humanities of Vietnam in particular, and contribute to economic, cultural, social development and international integration in general.
Within the framework of the forum, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh signed a cooperation agreement between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Brigham Young University, and the Institute for Global Engagement (USA) in the presence of the Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States.
The 4th International Scientific Conference of the Red River Basin Development Forum, themed “Economic, Cultural, Environmental Protection and Sustainable Tourism Development in the Red River Basin,” was organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Lao Cai Department of Culture and Tourism and Honghe Academy (China) on November 9th and 10th, 2012, in Lao Cai province.
The workshop focused on two main topics: the current state of research and development cooperation in the Red River basin; and some solutions to promote research cooperation to boost exchange activities in the Red River basin.
The presentations at this conference covered various aspects, with most focusing on the exploitation and preservation of cultural values and natural landscapes for sustainable tourism. They also emphasized the need for inter-regional and inter-sectoral development, balancing exploitation with conservation, short-term and long-term benefits, development with sustainable development, and improving human resources for tourism and sustainable tourism development in several localities in northern Vietnam and southwestern China.
Following the workshop, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lao Cai province, Honghe Academy (China), and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) collaborated on several joint research programs, including: a program for sustainable tourism development in the Red River basin, and a program for research on the culture of ethnic groups in border areas.
On April 16, 2013, the Institute of Policy and Management was established by upgrading the Center for Policy Research and Analysis, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Institute's functions and mission include research and training of management personnel and experts in policy science and management. With the motto "Think tank – Perception – Innovation," the Institute focuses on creativity and application, linking and bringing together a network of policy organizations in Vietnam.
The establishment of the Institute of Policy and Management will make a significant contribution to building the field of policy analysis and policy planning at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, contributing to improving the capacity and skills of human resources in the field of policy and management science, especially science and education management in Vietnam.
The 6th Congress of the Vietnam Student Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities took place on March 16, 2013, with the participation of 195 student delegates. The conference heard and discussed the report summarizing the Union's work and student movement during the 5th term (2010-2013) and the direction of work for the 6th term (2013-2015).
During its sixth term, the University's Student Union has determined to diversify its activities to promote and inspire aspirations and ideals in students; proactively and creatively implement various club programs to enhance life skills, integration capabilities, professional expertise, foreign language proficiency, learning and research methods; contribute to shaping the unique style and identity of students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities; and develop a team of Union officials at all levels.
The Congress adopted the direction and tasks of the Association's work and the student movement for the sixth term with the action slogan "Creativity - Connection - Reaching Further".
On July 11, 2013, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a handover ceremony for the in-depth investment project to build a Center for Journalism and Communication Training from Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and a signing ceremony for a cooperation agreement with the Vietnam Journalists Association.
The project to invest in the construction of a Journalism and Communication Training Experiment Center was implemented over three years (2010-2012) at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Its aim was to equip the University with a comprehensive and modern infrastructure for journalism training, including a studio, editing rooms, sound recording rooms, online news rooms, print media, and photojournalism facilities, meeting standards equivalent to many current media organizations. The project provided an opportunity for the Faculty of Journalism and Communication and the Center for Journalism and Communication Professional Skills to enhance their capacity in training journalistic skills.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim and Mr. Ha Minh Hue signed the official cooperation agreement between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Vietnam Journalists Association.
On this occasion, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Vietnam Journalists Association officially signed a cooperation agreement. This cooperation between a leading journalism training institution in the country and a major political, social, and professional organization representing 20,000 journalists nationwide is expected to bring about positive changes in journalism training and the professional activities of journalists in the future.
