The Conference of Public Officials and Staff of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for the academic year 2013-2014 took place on September 4, 2013. The conference was attended by 230 delegates representing nearly 500 staff and employees of the University. Associate Professor Dr. Phung Xuan Nha, Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, attended and chaired the conference.

During the past academic year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities achieved many accomplishments in various fields of activity. In the field of education, the University completed the conversion of 23 undergraduate and 54 postgraduate programs to meet output standards; developed dual degree programs, bringing the total number of programs to 154; implemented support for basic science disciplines; and introduced many innovations in teaching and learning. The University was awarded a national quality training certificate, meeting 98% of the criteria. Research activities yielded many outstanding results, with the University successfully bidding for 12 state-level research projects; organizing over 30 conferences, including 14 international conferences. The University's policy advisory council proposed important recommendations to Party and State agencies regarding research programs on the East Sea and Oc Eo culture. In the field of international relations, the University continues to sign cooperation agreements with many major universities around the world, bringing the total number of international partners to 190.



At the Conference, the University's work plan for the 2013-2014 academic year was defined as: "Continuing to develop the University of Social Sciences and Humanities towards a research university orientation; promoting administrative reform; fulfilling its pioneering and pivotal role in the higher education system; effectively implementing cooperation with domestic and international partners, strengthening knowledge transfer and contributing to community development; continuing to develop financial resources, improving the material and spiritual well-being of staff and employees."


In his opening remarks at the conference, Associate Professor Phung Xuan Nha, Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, highly praised the achievements of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities amidst the general difficulties facing the education sector and the country. Associate Professor Phung Xuan Nha stated that the University demonstrated strong consensus and determination in achieving its academic year goals. The results show strong signs of innovation and progress, such as: innovation in launching new training programs, pioneering the implementation of credit-based training, proactive planning of majors and specializations; and an increasingly prominent scientific position through the number of state-funded research projects, the number of leading professors, and significant contributions to advising on state policies regarding social sciences and humanities issues… The Director said:
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities continues to maintain its position as the leading university in the country in social sciences and humanities, and is one of the key units that build the brand of Vietnam National University, Hanoi."



Associate Professor Phung Xuan Nha also affirmed that the policy of Vietnam National University, Hanoi is:Focusing on grassroots units, the new regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi will have a high degree of decentralization.Therefore, units need to be more proactive, clear, and decisive in carrying out assigned tasks. The achievements of the grassroots units will create value and brand reputation for VNU.


Regarding the implementation of tasks for the new academic year, the Director noted several specific points for the School: in the development plan for majors and specializations, it is necessary to select those with potential for focused investment, avoiding a scattered approach; it is necessary to continue considering scientific research as a central task, participating strongly and in a key position in the Northwest Research Program and other interdisciplinary and key research programs of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the State, especially focusing on "hot" topics of society and the country, and emphasizing the practical application and widespread impact of these research results on society.

Regarding staff development, the Director suggested that the University should have a plan for building, training, and developing its staff, especially young staff, and implement effective policies to attract qualified personnel. In the coming academic year, the University also needs to be decisive in reforming university governance, considering administrative reform as a breakthrough solution.

At the Conference, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities awarded prizes to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in the 2012-2013 academic year; elected the People's Inspection Committee and launched the emulation movement for the new academic year 2013-2014 with the theme: "Innovation - Pioneering - Quality - Discipline".
