Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continues to rank first in Vietnam in the Webometrics ranking (January 2020).

Webometrics is a ranking system that assesses the digital capabilities and the reach and influence of academic resources of higher education institutions based on indicators such as website size (presence), the reach and influence of the website and online information (impact/visibility), the openness of academic resources (openness) on Google Scholar, and the scientific citation index on the Scopus database (excellence) of a higher education institution.

In this ranking, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi) continues to maintain its position as the number one higher education institution in Vietnam, ranking 1132nd in the world, 282nd in Asia, and 20th in Southeast Asia.

Regarding rankings by individual criteria, this ranking shows an increase in the positions of the two criteria "Openness" and "Excellence" – ranking 1629th and 1229th respectively (compared to 1635th and 1231st) – indicating a significant improvement and increase in the quality of international scientific publications and the scope of influence of VNU's online resource system in recent times.

The other two criteria, "Amount of Digital Resources" (Presence) and "Level of Influence" (Visibility/Impact), ranked 436th and 1853rd in the world, respectively.

Ranked second in Vietnam is Hanoi University of Technology, followed by Can Tho University and Ton Duc Thang University (1243, 2274, 2322), ... Hanoi University of Technology ranks first in Vietnam (1457th in the world) in terms of "Visibility".

In this ranking period, Webometrics made a slight change in its ranking methodology compared to the previous period (July 2019). Specifically, for the "Openness" criterion, Webometrics evaluates the number of citations of the first 110 authors in Google Scholar in descending order of citations, excluding the citations of the top 10 authors.

Previously, on September 11, 2019, the Times Higher Education (THE) announced the latest World University Rankings 2020 at the THE Academic Summit held in Zurich, Switzerland. For the first time, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and two other Vietnamese higher education institutions were ranked by THE alongside nearly 1,400 leading universities worldwide. VNU and Hanoi University of Science and Technology were in the 801-1000 group globally; followed by Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City in the 1000+ group.

Webometrics' ranking methodology:

1. Presence:This index measures the amount of digitized resources available online. Data is sourced from Google Search. It assesses the scale of the website and digital resources of a higher education institution. The ranking weight is 5%.

2. Visibility (or Impact):This index measures the number of links pointing to the university's website. Data is sourced from Ahrefs and Majestic. This index assesses the influence of the university's website system. Weight: 50%.

3. Openness (or Transparency):This index measures the number of citations of the top 110 scientists at a higher education institution who have profiles on Google Scholar (excluding the top 10 most cited scientists). Data is taken from Google Scholar. This index relates to the academic reach of the university. Weight: 10%.

4. Excellence (or Scholar):This index ranks the university's publications within the top 10% of most cited papers across 26 subject areas in the Scopus database (2013-2017).
