Webometrics is a ranking that evaluates the digital capacity and the level of dissemination and influence of academic resources of higher education institutions based on indicators of the scale of the website system (presence), the level of dissemination and influence of the website system and online information (impact/visibility), the openness of academic resources (openness) on Google Scholar, and the scientific citation index on the Scopus database system (excellence) of a higher education institution.
In this ranking, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continues to maintain its 1st position among higher education institutions in Vietnam with a ranking of 1132 in the world, 282 in Asia and 20 in Southeast Asia.
Regarding the ranking by each criterion, in this ranking, the increase in the ranking of the two criteria of “Openness” and “Excellence” – ranked 1629 and 1229 respectively (compared to 1635 and 1231) shows that the quality of international scientific publications as well as the scope of influence of the online resource system of VNU in the recent past has improved and increased significantly.
The other two criteria are “Presence” and “Visibility/Impact” which are ranked 436th and 1853rd in the world respectively.
Ranked 2nd in Vietnam is Hanoi University of Science and Technology, followed by Can Tho University and Ton Duc Thang University (1243, 2274, 2322), ... Hanoi University of Science and Technology ranks first in Vietnam (1457th in the world) in terms of "Visibility" criteria.
In this ranking, Webometrics has made a slight change in the ranking method compared to the previous one (July 2019). Specifically, in the "Openness" criterion, Webometrics evaluates the number of citations of the first 110 authors in Google Scholar in descending order of citations, excluding the number of citations of the first 10 authors.
Previously, on September 11, 2019, Times Higher Education (THE) announced the latest world university rankings (World University Rankings 2020) at the THE Academic Summit held in Zurich (Switzerland). Accordingly, for the first time, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and 02 Vietnamese higher education institutions were ranked by THE along with nearly 1,400 leading higher education institutions in the world. In which, VNU and Hanoi University of Science and Technology are in the 801-1000 group in the world; followed by Ho Chi Minh City National University in the 1000+ group.
Webometrics ranking method: 1. Presence:An index of the amount of digital resources posted online. Data taken from Google Search. This is an index of the scale of the website and digital resources of higher education institutions. The ranking weight is 5%. 2. Visibility (or Impact):An index of the number of links pointing to a university website. Data taken from Ahref and Majestic. This is an index of the influence of a university's website system. Weight: 50%. 3. Openness (or Transparency):index of the number of citations of the top 110 scientists of the higher education institution with profiles on Google Scholar (excluding the number of citations of the 10 most highly cited scientists). Data taken from Google Scholar. This is an index related to the level of academic influence of the university. Weight: 10%. 4. Excellence (or Scholar):The index ranks the number of articles of the university in the group of 10% of the most cited articles in 26 professional fields in the Scopus database (period 2013-2017). Data is taken from the Scopus database. This is an index to evaluate the quality of the university's top research works. Weight: 35%. |
