Hanoi National University holds emergency meeting to respond to nCoV; students given 10 days off.

Nearly 400 Chinese students who returned home for the Lunar New Year holiday have been informed by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi) that they must remain in China until early March 2020.

Given the complex developments of the pneumonia outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), on the afternoon of January 31, Vietnam National University, Hanoi convened an emergency meeting on responding to the respiratory illness caused by the 2019 coronavirus (nCoV), chaired by Director Nguyen Kim Son.

With the highest priority being to prevent the outbreak and spread of the disease, and to minimize the risk to the health of students and staff, Hanoi National University has officially decided to suspend classes for 10 days, from February 1st to February 9th, 2020.

At the same time, subordinate units are advised to limit the organization of conferences, seminars, and large gatherings during this period, and to maintain personal hygiene and a clean working environment.

Hanoi National University has established a Steering Committee to respond to the nCoV 2029 epidemic, chaired by Vice Director Nguyen Hoang Hai. Simultaneously, a hotline (0913057611) has been announced to receive information related to the epidemic.

Hanoi National University also assigned the Student Support Center and the Hanoi National University Hospital to coordinate with the Hanoi Department of Health to carry out epidemiological sanitation work in schools and dormitories, and to provide guidance on disease prevention measures for staff, students, trainees, and residents in the areas where Hanoi National University's units are located.

Shortly afterwards, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, announced that undergraduate and postgraduate students would be given time off from classes due to the Coronavirus flu outbreak until February 9, 2020.

During the school break, students and trainees should stay in their local area/residence, limit travel and contact with crowded places, and regularly update themselves on school announcements as well as take preventive measures against the epidemic as recommended by the Ministry of Health.

On the evening of January 31st, informing the Kinh Te & Do Thi newspaper about the number of Chinese students studying at the university, Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - said: “Nearly 400 Chinese students who returned home for Tet (Lunar New Year) have been informed by the university to stay in China until March 2nd, 2020. By the end of February, based on the epidemic situation, the university will inform the Chinese students about the plan again.”
