Professor Tran Van Giau studied in France from 1928 and joined the French Communist Party in May 1929. From 1931-1932, he studied at the Moscow Oriental University and then returned to Vietnam to participate in revolutionary activities in the Southern Regional Committee.

From 1931-1932, he studied at the Moscow Oriental University and then returned to Vietnam to participate in revolutionary activities in the Southern Regional Committee.From 1933 to 1941, he was imprisoned by the French colonialists four times. In October 1943, he was Secretary of the Southern Regional Party Committee. After the successful general uprising in Saigon and six Southern provinces, he was Chairman of the Provisional People's Committee of the South. At the end of 1945, he was sent to the North to work and teach history. He was one of the founders of the foundation for the development of a social science and humanities sector in our country. His typical works are: History of resistance against invaders (3 volumes, 1956-1957); History of the Vietnamese working class (4 volumes, 1,500 pages); Modern history of Vietnam; The South holds the citadel; The development of Vietnamese thought from the 19th century to the August Revolution; Cultural geography of Ho Chi Minh City; Traditional spiritual values of the Vietnamese people The group of works on Vietnamese history (5 volumes) including works by Professor Tran Van Giau published from 1956 to 1978 is highly appreciated for containing many new discoveries, presenting convincing and scientific viewpoints. This is also the work that the State awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize in 1996. In addition, he was also awarded the title of Labor Hero (2003), the First Class Independence Medal and many other noble titles. Professor Tran Van Giau was born on September 11, 1911 in Chau Thanh, Tan An (now Long An). Due to old age and poor health, he passed away on the afternoon of December 16, 2010, at the age of 100. Tomorrow, December 23, 2010, Professor Tran Van Giau's funeral will be held according to state-level rituals.
