Professor Tran Van Giau studied in France from 1928 and joined the French Communist Party in May 1929. From 1931-1932, he studied at the Moscow University of the Orient before returning to Vietnam to participate in revolutionary activities within the Southern Regional Party Committee.
Professor Tran Van Giau studied in France from 1928 and joined the French Communist Party in May 1929. From 1931-1932, he studied at the Moscow University of the Orient before returning to Vietnam to participate in revolutionary activities within the Southern Regional Party Committee.From 1933 to 1941, he was imprisoned four times by the French colonial authorities. In October 1943, he was the Secretary of the Southern Regional Party Committee. After the successful general uprising in Saigon and six southern provinces, he became the Chairman of the Provisional People's Committee of Southern Vietnam. At the end of 1945, he was sent to the North to work and teach history. He was one of the pioneers who laid the foundation for the development of social sciences and humanities in our country. His representative works include: History of Resistance Against Invasion (3 volumes, 1956-1957); History of the Vietnamese Working Class (4 volumes, 1,500 pages); Modern History of Vietnam; The South Defends as a Fortress; The Development of Vietnamese Thought from the 19th Century to the August Revolution; Cultural Geography of Ho Chi Minh City; The traditional spiritual values of the Vietnamese nation: The five-volume work on Vietnamese history, comprising works by Professor Tran Van Giau published from 1956 to 1978, is highly regarded for its many new discoveries and persuasive, scientific viewpoints. This work was also awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize in 1996. In addition, he was awarded the title of Hero of Labor (2003), the First Class Independence Medal, and many other prestigious titles. Professor Tran Van Giau was born on September 11, 1911, in Chau Thanh, Tan An (now Long An). Due to old age and declining health, he passed away on the afternoon of December 16, 2010, at the age of 100. Tomorrow, December 23, 2010, the funeral ceremony for Professor Tran Van Giau will be held according to state protocol.
