On December 7, 2010, the Center for Research and Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) and the Bac Giang Provincial Youth Union conducted a survey and provided funding in Son Hai commune, Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province. The main focus of this survey was Son Hai Commune Primary School. According to the school's administration, Son Hai Commune Primary School currently lacks adequate facilities, and the lives of teachers and students are fraught with difficulties. Due to the complex terrain, transportation is challenging and arduous. Students have to travel 4-5km, and many have to row boats to school. Because the area is large and scattered, in addition to the main school, classes are held at many remote locations, some nearly 20km away. To improve the quality of education, the school organizes extra classes for the students. However, many students who live far from school and stay at school only have rice balls or instant noodles brought from home for lunch, and sometimes even go without eating. Despite these difficulties, the school has strived to achieve universal education for the appropriate age group and ensure that no students drop out. Sharing about the difficulties faced by Son Hai commune in general and Son Hai Primary School in particular, Ms. Ngo Thi Hoa (Deputy Director) said that the Center plans to provide funding to the locality and the school with a total value of 212 million VND. In addition, the Center will support commune officials to participate in training courses to improve their skills if the locality has a need. According to the plan, the funding program will be organized in the second quarter of 2011. Also in Bac Giang province, on January 5th, 2011, the Center for Research and Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas will organize a funding ceremony for the Bac Giang Provincial Youth Union with a total value of approximately 150 million VND.
