To honor the memory of Professor Tran Van Giau, the Central Committee of the Party, the National Assembly, the Government, etc., decided to organize his funeral according to state funeral rites.
To honor the memory of Professor Tran Van Giau, the Central Committee of the Party, the National Assembly, the Government, etc., decided to organize his funeral according to state funeral rites.Professor Tran Van Giau's remains are laid in state at the Ho Chi Minh City Hall (111 Ba Huyen Thanh Quan Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City). The wake will be held from 10:00 AM on December 23rd, the memorial service at 7:30 AM on December 25th, and the burial will take place in his hometown in An Luc Long commune, Chau Thanh district, Long An province. Mr. Le Thanh Hai, Member of the Politburo and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, has been appointed as the head of the funeral committee for Professor Tran Van Giau. Professor Tran Van Giau was born on September 6, 1911, in Long An province (formerly Tan An province). In his youth, he went to Saigon to study at Chasseloup Laubat high school before going to France to study. There, he participated in anti-colonial movements to protect Vietnamese revolutionary fighters and was arrested. In mid-1930, he was deported back to Vietnam and immediately joined the Indochinese Communist Party. The name Tran Van Giau is closely associated with the August Revolution in Southern Vietnam. In 1943, he was elected Secretary of the Southern Regional Party Committee and later Chairman of the Southern Resistance Committee. Professor Giau is also considered the "father" of numerous research works and writings on Vietnamese history and philosophy. He also mentored many leading researchers and historians in Vietnam. He has received state awards for several of his works, including books such as: Cosmology, Historical Materialism, Dialectics, Anti-Invasion, History of the Vietnamese Working Class, The South Defends as a Fortress, and Cultural Landmarks of Ho Chi Minh City… In 2001, Professor Giau decided to sell his house and donate 1,000 gold bars to the Vietnam Historical Science Association to be used as a prize fund for historical research works on Southern Vietnam. Professor Tran Van Giau was awarded many prestigious honors and titles for his contributions to the revolution and the country, such as: the Ho Chi Minh Order, Hero of Labor during the đổi mới (renovation) period, People's Teacher, Ho Chi Minh Prize, 80-Year Party Membership Badge… Approaching his 100th birthday, his health had deteriorated significantly. During the Lunar New Year of the Tiger, he was admitted for treatment and convalescence at Thong Nhat Hospital. On the occasion of the recent Vietnamese Teachers' Day, many leaders visited and congratulated the professor at his bedside. The professor received dedicated care and treatment from the Party, the State, the medical sector, and his family, but due to his advanced age and frail health, he passed away on the afternoon of December 16th, at the age of 100.
