The Department of Anthropology welcomes the new academic year.

On October 2nd, 2017, the faculty and students of the Department of Anthropology held an opening ceremony to welcome the new academic year 2017-2018. On this occasion, the Department also awarded the Phan Huu Dat scholarship to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have excelled in their studies.

Attending the ceremony were Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the university); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Rector of the university); Ms. Le Thi Quyen (Head of the Planning and Finance Department); Dr. Pham Huy Cuong (Deputy Head of the Political and Student Affairs Department); Mr. Nguyen Van Thuy (Head of the Inspection and Legal Affairs Department); Dr. Tran Bach Hieu (Secretary of the Youth Union); Dr. Tran Huu Son (Folklore Association); Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh (Deputy Director of the Institute of Ethnology - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences); Assoc. Prof. Pham Van Duong (Deputy Director of the Museum of Ethnology); and from the Faculty of Anthropology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Suu (Head of the Faculty); Prof. Lam Ba Nam (Chairman of the Scientific and Training Council, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology). In addition, the ceremony was attended by a large number of lecturers, students, postgraduate students, and doctoral candidates from the Faculty.

Opening the ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Suu delivered a speech reviewing the achievements and activities of the Faculty during the 2016-2017 academic year. Throughout the past year, the faculty and students of the Anthropology Faculty have strived tirelessly to achieve high results in their studies and research. With a long-standing tradition dating back to its origins as the Ethnology Department of the History Faculty, the Anthropology Faculty has gradually established an independent position and affirmed its standing within the social sciences. Continuing this tradition, the faculty members, students, and researchers of the Faculty are constantly improving themselves to progress further in their studies, teaching, and research. “We cannot help but be proud of our glorious traditions and achievements, but we also need to continue moving forward with a broad and far-sighted vision, both in the short and long term, with a mission to be a major anthropology center of the country, to conduct high-quality anthropology research, and to train professional anthropology human resources to serve society and the nation.” – Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Suu shared.

Also at the ceremony, Dr. Pham Huy Cuong (Deputy Head of the Political and Student Affairs Department) announced the Rector's commendation decisions for students of the Faculty of Anthropology who achieved excellent academic and training results in the past academic year. At the same time, the Faculty also awarded 5 Pham Huu Dat scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have excelled in their studies. This serves as a great encouragement for the students to strive even harder.

 Dr. Pham Huy Cuong (Deputy Head of the Political and Student Affairs Department) announced the commendation decisions for students of the Anthropology Faculty.

Professor Lam Ba Nam awarded the Phan Huu Dat scholarship to 4 undergraduate students and 1 postgraduate student in the department who have achieved good academic results and shown academic excellence.

Present at the ceremony, Professor Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the university) extended his congratulations on the achievements of the faculty, leaders, and students of the Department. The Rector also emphasized the importance of training human resources in the field of Anthropology in the process of national construction and development.

As the new academic year begins, the faculty and students of the Department of Anthropology have set goals for themselves, focusing on three major objectives:

  • Strengthen communication and promotion of the image of Anthropology, as well as the research and training products of the Department of Anthropology.
  • Continue to develop the faculty of the department, making the Department of Anthropology stronger both in quantity and quality, so as to confidently move forward in the mission of training future anthropologists.
  • Continuing to promote high-quality research activities, the teachers strive to deliver passionate lectures to students, inspiring them with enthusiasm, dedication, and a strong will to learn and build a successful future, not only for themselves but also for society and the country.

Some achievements of the Department of Anthropology in the 2016-2017 academic year:

  • 19 students completed their graduation theses with good results.
  • 54 students graduated, including Nghiêm Thị Kim Anh, who graduated as valedictorian with excellent grades.
  • At the postgraduate level, 9 postgraduate students were awarded Master's degrees, 3 doctoral candidates successfully defended their theses at the institutional level, and 1 doctoral candidate successfully defended theirs at the national level.
  • Nine students from the department received commendations from the Rector.
  • 14 students received scholarships from foreign foundations and organizations.
  • 6 scientific papers published internationally.
