Summary of 5 years of undergraduate training in Anthropology (2009-2014)

On the morning of December 26, 2014, the Department of Anthropology held a conference to summarize the five-year undergraduate training program in Anthropology, from 2009 to 2014.

Attending the Conference, in addition to lecturers, students, graduate students, and doctoral candidates of the Department, were Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh, Vice Rector of the University, and leaders from the Training Department, Postgraduate Training Department, Political and Student Affairs Department, Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Department, Inspection and Legal Affairs Department, Faculty of History, Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, Anthropology Museum, and Quality Assurance Center.

On the part of partner units outside of Hanoi National University, the participants included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vuong Xuan Tinh, Director of the Institute of Ethnology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Thieu, Deputy Director of the Museum of Ethnology, and scientists involved in the training work of the Department.

The conference heard a summary report on undergraduate training in Anthropology from the Head of Department, as well as reports on the practical teaching of subjects, internships, and scientific research by faculty members and scientists.

The conference discussion was lively, with many suggestions regarding training in all aspects (training programs, subjects, learning materials, research, internships, cooperation, etc.) both currently and in the coming years.

The conference concluded that, over the past five years:

  • The Department of Anthropology has proactively and diligently developed and perfected the system of undergraduate and postgraduate training programs in Anthropology, successfully training six cohorts of undergraduate students in Anthropology, two of whom have achieved high graduation rates.
  • The Board of Directors and the functional departments of the University have created many favorable conditions to help the Department fulfill its mission of training in a new field of study in Vietnam with high quality.
  • Several teachers from various departments within the University, such as the Department of History, the Department of Linguistics, the Department of Philosophy, the Museum of Anthropology, etc., along with some scientists from relevant institutions such as the Institute of Ethnology, the Museum of Ethnology, etc., actively supported and effectively participated in helping the Department implement the training program more smoothly and sustainably.
  • Building upon the foundation of Ethnology, the undergraduate program in Anthropology has become one of the University's leading basic science training programs, promising significant contributions to the cause of science and technology, and the building and development of the country.

Based on that, the Department's main focus in the coming period will be on the following tasks:

  • Continue to strengthen the development of the teaching staff in conjunction with promoting scientific research as a foundation for promoting and improving the quality of education.
  • Continue to adjust, update, and refine the curriculum and course syllabi.
  • Speed ​​up the process of compiling lectures and textbooks.
  • Continue to supplement reference materials that directly support research, teaching, and learning activities.
  • Implement the internationalization of some subjects taught in English.
  • Enhancing scientific research by faculty and students.
  • Further improve the effectiveness of practical training programs.
  • Promote innovation in teaching, testing, and evaluation methods.

To effectively implement the above tasks, the Department recommends the following to the University:

  • Establish a Department of Anthropology soon.
  • Prioritize support for faculty recruitment.
  • Facilitate the Department of Anthropology in developing lecture materials, and compiling and publishing several basic and specialized textbooks.
  • Increase training support for the field of Anthropology.
  • Increase scholarships to encourage Anthropology students.
