On January 18th 2016, University of Social Sciences and Humanities held the Ceremony to announce the appointment of New Rector for the term 2016-2020. On this occasion, newly-appointed Rector Pham Quang Minh expressed his appreciation for the contributions made by previous leaders and shared the University’s visions in the next term, including the appreciation of professional, open, friendly and fair university governance that can extract all resources, promote creativity and attract more talent.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh (Rector of USSH) shared his gratitude, thankfulness and also acknowledged his heavy responsibilities for having been entrusted and appointed as Rector of one the most prestigious and traditional universities in Vietnam.

How the University was going to be in the next 5 years – that is the question concerning Assoc. Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh as he received his new task. He remarked: “My vision for it is our University of Social Sciences and Humanities should become one of the leading advanced research-based universities in Asia - one that acquires the core values of liberal education; creates a democratic and friendly environment, adopts constructive dialogues and criticisms; and gets involved in integration, all of which are central in developing  maximum the creativity and capability of all its members.”

Based on the valuable traditions and achievements in 70 years of establishment and development of a leading university in Vietnam; and with the University’s dynamism, creativity and determination for international integration in the context of globalization and regionalization, the Rector expressed his belief in the possibilities of realizing the given goals.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh said the crucial tasks for USSH in his next term are: Continue to promote and perfect the research-based university model appropriate to the context of Vietnam; nurture and develop the University’s personnel, especially young staff; improve and integrate educational quality, especially higher education; strive to create top-notch scientific products; and utilize and employ financial resources appropriately.

He said, the “groundbreaking task is to create a professional governance environment, which is open, friendly and equitable, and of which every faculty, staff member or student feels he or she is part. In such an environment, resources will be freed, everyone will consciously and zealously devote himself to the cause of our University, which can attract more talented faculty members and students and become a reliable and attractive destination for both domestic and international partners”.

He also expressed his appreciation for the contributions made by previous leaders.

At the ceremony, Prof. Dr Nguyen Van Khanh – former Rector of USSH, shared his thoughts as one of the leaders that worked for the University for the longest time. He served as Rector of 10 years and as Secretary of the University’s Party Committee for 12 years.

During his two terms, Prof. Dr Nguyen Van Khanh along with the Party Committee, Board of Rectors and the whole University was gradually developing and realizing many policies with many important results such as the experimentation of training model that combines training, research and services under the forms of an Institution and Services and Tourism Company; the development of many policies that encourage lecturers and staff to actively seek and successfully bid for potential research projects; the promotion of international publications; the extension of international relations, especially relations with leading universities in the world; the facilitation of staff’ skills; all of which improve the international status and reputation of the University as a whole.

The former Rector expressed his full confidence in the future of USSH: “For 20 years and having been through 4 generations of Rectors, USSH has made excellent improvements. In the upcoming future, I hope and believe that, USSH will continue to develop as one of the leading institutions in social sciences and humanities, and will soon enter the rank of leading universities in the region and the world

Vice President of VNU, Hanoi Nguyen Huu Duc congratulated Assoc. Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh and hoped the new Rector will be determined, genuine and persistent in pursuing the University’s directions of development; developing a strong collective solidarity within it; and quickly actualizing its policies, concretizing the decisions made at the Party Conference based on which to develop the plan for 2015-2016, and consolidating the position of USSH as a leading Vietnamese social sciences and humanities university.

Mr Giles Lever – Ambassador of UK to Vietnam speaks at the ceremony

The UK Ambassador to Vietnam Giles Lever delivered a speech to congratulate the new Rector and said: Assoc. Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh had always supported and facilitated the international integration of education and training of Vietnam. In the future, educational cooperation will remain a crucial aspect in the strategic relations between Vietnam and the UK in general and between USSH and British partners in particular.
