In 2015, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University scored many prominent achievements in different activities. These achievements demonstrate the unceasing efforts of USSH’s staff, lecturers and students, and confirm the correct steps made by the University until now.

1. The 27th Party Congress for the term 2015-2020

The Congress took place from April 9th to 10th, 2015 with the participation of 157 delegates. The Congress discussed important issues concerning the development of the University in the period of 2015-2000, including the primary goal of becoming a research-based university, a leading institution in social sciences and humanities, and striving to enter top 100 best Asian universities in 2020.

The Congress also appointed the 27th Executive Committee of the University’s Party Committee with 14 members. Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Van Kim was selected as the Party’s Secretary in the period of 2015-2020. 

2. 70th anniversary of the establishment of University of Literature and 20th anniversary of USSH

In 2015, USSH held many events to celebrate 70th anniversary of the establishment of University of Literature and 20th anniversary of USSH such as press conferences, an exhibition titled “My University”, and several domestic and international conferences. The celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of University of Literature and 20th anniversary of USSH was formally held on October 6th, 2015 at the National Convention Center. At the ceremony, on behalf of the Party and Government, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam granted USSH the 2nd First Labor Medal, commemorating the University’s contributions to national development.

2015 was also the year in which many faculties celebrated their establishment such as the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Faculty of Journalism and Communication; 20th anniversaries of Faculty of International Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies and Faculty of Tourism.  

3. Examination based on the evaluation of capacity

2015 was the first year that USSH began to admit students into different majors based on the examination that evaluated their capacity. This is a new method of examination in which students were required to take only one exam in a single session, the multi-choice questionnaires were computerized, and the candidates were given different versions of the test and knew the results right away. This model received the attention and support of the majority of test takers.   

4.  Many large conferences were successfully held

Many domestic and international conferences were successfully organized, a bright spot in the scientific progress of the University in 2015. Not only tackling theoretical issues, the conferences strived to realize research findings in resolving the practical issues of national development, helped open up more opportunities for international cooperation and created linkages and networks among the domestic and international scholarly community.

Some prominent domestic and international conferences in the year 2015 included: Vietnamese anthropology: history, facts and prospects; the maritime Silk Road and international relations in the East Sea: Facts and prospects; Construction of open source database for higher education in Vietnam.  

5.  Improving the awareness of quality accrediation

Being cognizant of the importance of quality accreditation in improving the quality of training, in 2015, USSH organized many events aimed at this objective, which are as follows:

From October 14th to 16th, 2015, the external accreditation team of ASEAN University Network (AUN) evaluated the bachelor's program in Oriental Studies.

Next, from December 1st to 4th, 2015, USSH welcomed and worked with the external accreditation team of the Center for Education Quality Evaluation, VNU, Ho Chi Minh City to commence the evaluation program at basic level according to the Standards set forth by Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition, in 2015, USSH also held peer-assessments of the advanced bachelor's programs of Faculty of Management Studies, Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Literature. 

6.  Introduction of the Regulation on management and procedural stratification at USSH, VNU

To further promote administrative reforms and improve the quality of administrative activities, on September 14th, 2015, the Rector of USSH issued Decision no 2173/QĐ-XHNV on the Regulation of the management and procedural stratification of USSH, VNU Hanoi.

The Regulation is USSH's realization and application of different legal instruments compiled by the State and the regulations made by VNU into its own system.

It consists of 20 chapters regulating the management and procedural stratification based on tasks rather than functional departments. 

7.  Introduction of the Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities

On May 11th, 2015, Ministry of Information and Communications issued the license no 155/GP-MOIC that permitted the publication of the Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities. 6 issues of the journal is published annually, including one in English, and each of which consists of 100 pages.

The journal is a forum through which scholars discuss and publish their research findings in the field of social sciences and humanities. The first issue was published on the occasion of the University's 20th anniversary.

On January 13th, 2015, the Ministry of Information and Communications released the license no 16/GP-MOIC that amended the regulations on licensed journalism, according to which the Journal is permitted to release 2 issues in English/year, and each issue is added 100 pages in its length. 

8. A New Rector appointed

On December 23rd, 2015, the Director of VNU signed decision no 5168/QĐ-VNU on the appointment of Assoc. Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh (Vice Rector of USSH) as Rector of USSH since January 1st, 2016.

The inaugural ceremony was formally held on January 18th, 2016 at the 8th Hall. At the ceremony, Rector Pham Quang Minh expressed his appreciation for the contributions made by previous leaders and shared his visions on creating a professional governance environment, which is open, friendly and equitable. In such an environment, resources will be freed, everyone will consciously and enthusiastically devote himself to the cause of their University, helping it attract more talented faculty members and students and become a reliable and attractive place for both domestic and international partners.

9.  Establishment of the Faculty of Anthropology

On September 29th, 2015, USSH, VNU announced the decision to establish Faculty of Anthropology, raising the number of faculties at the University to 16.

The Faculty is part of the former Division of Anthropology, USSH, VNU. The introduction of the Faculty greatly contributes to the training of anthropologists, who possess great professional skills and qualities and can contribute to a better workforce in the context of national industrialization, modernization and international integration.  

10.  USSH’s students with the project of young National assembly members

In 2015, several students of USSH participated in the project for young Vietnamese National Assembly's members. The project provides necessary knowledge and skills for potential members of the National assembly, holds simulated conferences of the Assembly, in which the students discuss relevant policy issues.

Among hundreds of candidates from other universities, Dang Trung Anh, student of the Faculty of Management Science was successfully voted one of the 8 distinguished participants, who then traveled to the United Kingdom and took part in the sessions of British Parliament for 10 days. This event is a good opportunity for the students to learn from each other and exchange necessary experiences for their future career.
