1. Purpose and scope of the thesis

The research objective of this thesis is to reconstruct the economic and social transformation process in Saigon from 1965 to 1975. Simultaneously, it aims to explain the influencing factors and causes leading to the economic and social transformation of Saigon. Through this, it draws some conclusions about the economic and social transformation of Saigon.

The subject of this thesis is the economic and social transformation of Saigon from 1965 to 1975.

2. Research methods used

Besides the traditional methods of historiography, namely the historical method and the logical method, the author also uses several other methods to clarify the research subject, such as statistical methods, analysis, comparison, synthesis, and interdisciplinary methods.

3. Main results and conclusions

3.1. Main results

  1. A sketch of Saigon's appearance before 1965;
  2. Describe the economic and social transformation process in Saigon through two periods: 1965-1968 and 1969-1975;
  3. Analyze the factors influencing economic and social transformation in Saigon from 1965 to 1975, such as US aid, policies of the Republic of Vietnam government, and the war;
  4. Analyze the positive and negative consequences of the economic and social transformation process in Saigon from 1965 to 1975;
  5. Offer some implications for the current construction and development of Ho Chi Minh City.

3.2. Conclusion

  1. The economic and social transformations in Saigon from 1965 to 1975 are clearly reflected in two basic periods: 1965-1968 and 1969-1975.
    • During the period 1965-1968, under the impact of abundant aid from the United States, the policies of the Republic of Vietnam government, and the localized war, the economy and society of Saigon underwent rapid and strong transformations; this was a period of urban development for Saigon.
    • During the period 1969-1975, in the new context of Vietnamization of the war and after the Paris Agreement, the impacts of the US troop withdrawal and reduced aid caused the urban economy and society of Saigon to enter a period of decline and collapse on April 30, 1975;
  2. Saigon's economic and social transformation was continuous and rapid. This transformation was influenced by many factors, from US aid and the policies of the South Vietnamese government to, especially, the war. The economic and social changes in Saigon had both positive and negative aspects.

The purpose of this thesis is to reconstruct the economic and social transformation process in Saigon from 1965 to 1975. At the same time, to explain factors that caused the change in economy and society of Saigon. Thereby, drawing some comments about the changes in the economic and social transformation in Saigon.

The objective of this thesis focuses on the sociometric changes that took place in Sai Gon from 1965 to 1975.

In addition to the traditional method which are historical and logical, the author uses a number of other methods to clarify objectives such as statistical, analysis, comparison, synthesis and interdisciplinary methods.

3.1. The major results

Outlines the appearance of Saigon before 1965;

  • Describes the process of sociometric changes in Saigon through two stages 1965-1968 and 1969-1975;

  • Analysis of the factors affecting the sociometric changes in Saigon from 1965 to 1975 with United Sates aid, the policies of the Republic of Vietnam and the war;

  • Analysis of the positive and negative consequences of process of sociometric change in Saigon from 1965 to 1975;

  • Gives some implications for the construction and development of HCMC today.

3.2. Conclusions

The sociometric changes in Saigon from 1965 to 1975 were clearly illustrated by the two basic phases of 1965-1968 and 1969-1975:

  • During the period of 1965-1968, under the influence of abundant aid from the United States the policies of the Republic of Vietnam and the local. The economic and social policies of Saigon have made rapid and strong changes. This was the period of development of Sai Gon;

  • During the period of 1969-1975, of the new Vietnamization of the war and after the Paris Agreement. The effects of the United Sates withdrawal and reduction of aid have contributed to the decline in the economy and the urban society of Saigon which resulted in their collapsed on April 30, 1975;

The process of the sociometric change in Sai Gon took place continuously at a rapid pace. The change was influenced by many factors, from US aid, the policy of the Republic of Vietnam and especially from the war. Economic and social transformation in Saigon has both positive and negative factors.
