11. Summary of new results of the thesis
Conflicts between Catholic couples in the past 12 months – especially those involving Catholic couples – were also common, but to a lesser extent than those involving non-Catholic couples. There are two factors that influence the occurrence of conflicts: the number of children; and differences in personal characteristics and religion.
Marital conflict in Catholic families is assessed in three dimensions: cognition, attitude; behavior; emotional psychology. In terms of cognition, Catholics in general have a certain compatibility in their religious beliefs as well as their attitudes towards marital relationships. There are three groups of behaviors that represent the severity of marital conflict in Catholic families, and are mainly expressed in the less serious group, with very few serious conflicts and violent conflicts. The emotional psychology of conflict shows that the negative impacts on the marital relationship are not too serious.
There are two basic trends in resolving marital conflicts: the moderate trend, and the extreme trend. However, the general trend in resolving conflicts is the moderate trend.
Religious similarities help couples easily share common moral values, which helps prevent and avoid conflicts. Individual religious beliefs and practices help reduce the severity of behaviors and actions between husband and wife during conflicts. Catholicism has played an important role in soothing and reducing emotional and mental damage in marital conflicts; encouraging them to choose peaceful solutions to resolve conflicts; guiding the behavior of spouses in resolving conflicts and providing direct support for activities of counseling, sharing, and bridging reconciliation between spouses.
