PART I: GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE TRAINING PROGRAM

2. Objectives of the training program

2.1. General Objectives

The Master's program in Linguistics aims to equip students with the knowledge to become highly qualified human resources with a solid and systematic foundation in linguistics and related fields; to enhance research capabilities, critical thinking, and the ability to apply modern theories and research methods to solve theoretical and practical problems in the field of linguistics; and to possess professional qualities, a sense of social responsibility, and the ability to adapt to the working environment in the context of digital transformation and international integration.

2.2. Specific Objectives

- Specific Objective 1(O1): The program equips students with a solid and systematic foundation of knowledge in Linguistics and related fields, serving as a basis for research, teaching, and application; helps students master and systematize basic and in-depth knowledge of Linguistics and some related research directions such as: linguistics, Vietnamese language, comparative linguistics, language and culture; understand the theoretical basis, methodology, and modern research schools and trends in Linguistics; apply appropriate theoretical knowledge and approaches to explain academic and practical problems in the field of language.

- Specific Objective 2(O2): Develop essential research and professional skills for students, including the ability to flexibly apply linguistic research methods and tools to collect, process, analyze, and evaluate linguistic data; design and conduct small- and medium-scale research related to theoretical and practical issues in linguistics; write reports, essays, and master's theses that meet academic standards; present, exchange, and debate academically at a level appropriate for a master's degree; use foreign languages, digital technology, and some artificial intelligence tools to support learning and research, meeting the requirements of integration.

- Specific Objective 3(O3): To develop in students the ability to work independently, a sense of autonomy in learning and research, teaching and applying the language; to adhere to professional and research ethics standards, and respect intellectual property rights; to have a lifelong learning spirit, proactively self-improve and develop personal abilities; to adapt to a competitive work environment, meet the needs of employers and stakeholders, and contribute to the development of high-level human resources for society and the country in the context of international integration.

3. Admission Information

3.1. Admission method:The admission process follows the regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi).

3.2. Eligibility Criteria

3.2.1. Diplomas

- Applicants must possess a university degree in a relevant field with a GPA of "good" or higher, or have published scientific papers related to linguistics. If applicants require supplementary courses, these must be completed before applying.

- University degrees awarded by foreign educational institutions must undergo the degree recognition procedure in accordance with the current regulations of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

3.2.2. Regarding foreign language proficiency

- Possess foreign language proficiency (in one of the following languages: English, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Korean) at level 3 or higher according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam. Foreign language proficiency can be demonstrated by one of the following diplomas or certificates:

+ A university degree or higher in a foreign language; or a university degree or higher where the program is primarily conducted in a foreign language;

+ A university degree or higher awarded by Vietnam National University, Hanoi, within the last two years, where the program's output meets the requirements of Level 3 or higher according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam;

+ A foreign language certificate equivalent to Level 3 or higher according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam, or equivalent, valid for 2 years from the date of the foreign language exam to the date of registration for the master's program, issued by institutions recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

- Applicants who are foreign citizens and register for master's programs taught in Vietnamese must have a Vietnamese language proficiency level of 4 or higher according to the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, or have graduated from a university (or equivalent qualification or higher) where the training program was taught in Vietnamese.

3.2.3. Other requirements

- Has a clean personal record and is not currently under criminal investigation.

- I am healthy enough to study.

- Meet other requirements of VNU.

3.3. List of suitable industries

- Linguistics, Language and Culture of Ethnic Minorities in Vietnam, Vietnamese Language and Culture, Vietnamese Language.

- The field of study is defined in the training program standards issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

- For cases where there are no established training program standards for the corresponding field or group of disciplines, the specialized unit must have a scientific and practical basis, determined by the Scientific and Training Council of the specialized unit and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, to identify the discipline with the closest professional foundation to the training program and determine the corresponding supplementary courses (if needed); report to VNU before enrollment and be responsible for this professional evaluation.

3.4. Projected enrollment size

- According to the quotas granted annually by Vietnam National University, Hanoi (expected 20-25 students/year)

- The detailed admission plan is implemented according to the Admission Regulations, the annual postgraduate admission guidelines of VNU, and the unit's admission plan approved by VNU (if any).

PART II: LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Knowledge Output Standards

PLO 1.Applying scientific methodology and dialectical thinking in analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating issues in the field of Linguistics.

PLO 2.This course explains linguistic-related issues by applying specialized and interdisciplinary knowledge and research methods.

PLO 3.This study analyzes and evaluates several research areas related to Linguistics, including general theoretical issues and fundamental and advanced research directions in linguistics.

1.3. Scientific research

1.3.1. Research Topic

PLO 4.Identify and develop a research topic, and present the research results in the form of a presentation or a research product such as an article or thesis.

1.3.2. Master's thesis

PLO 5.The master's thesis must meet the requirements of the training program and the current regulations on postgraduate training of Vietnam National University, Hanoi; the thesis must make a new contribution at an appropriate academic level, be the result of independent research by the student, and comply with research ethics standards.

2. Skill Output Standards

PLO 6.Develop and apply a research framework for a linguistics topic (developing an outline, conducting fieldwork, collecting and processing data, analyzing, synthesizing, and presenting research results, etc.).

PLO 7.The systematization and exchange of knowledge in linguistics is achieved through research and discussion of professional and scientific issues with linguistics researchers both domestically and internationally.

PLO 8.Plan and organize teamwork to solve problems related to language and linguistics.

PLO 9.Deliver presentations, discussions, debates, dialogues, online communication, and written communication clearly, logically, and persuasively.

PLO 10.Using English equivalent to level 4/6 of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework applied to Vietnam in professional work, research, and accessing information related to professional activities in Linguistics.

3. Output standards regarding autonomy and responsibility.

PLO 11.Identify and solve professional problems in the field of linguistics, and propose initiatives with scientific and practical value.

PLO 12.Self-reliance in learning and research; professional work ethic; adherence to academic integrity; respect for cultural and linguistic diversity; and responsibility to the community.

4. Job positions that students can take on after graduation.

After graduating from the Master's program in Linguistics, students can use the knowledge and skills acquired to participate in and take on various positions:

- Linguistics researchers at research institutes in Vietnam and abroad; research management staff at these institutions;

- Lecturers in linguistics or language teachers (Vietnamese, foreign languages) at universities and colleges in Vietnam and abroad; lecturers of Vietnamese, Literature, or Foreign Languages ​​at secondary schools; and administrative staff at these institutions;

- Editors at publishing houses; editors and reporters at media organizations; document specialists at central and local government agencies; management staff at these agencies;

- Language technicians in fields such as information technology, cryptography, forensic science, speech rehabilitation medicine, etc.

- Communications, marketing, and translation staff for companies; policy consultants for language and culture training and research programs; and management staff in these organizations.

5. Opportunities for further learning and professional development after graduation.

- Capable of independently researching and solving problems arising during practical work at specialized research institutions, university training facilities, news agencies, and policy-making bodies related to linguistics.

- Capable of self-learning and independent research on theoretical and practical issues related to language and culture.

- There are opportunities to pursue higher education (doctorate) in linguistics to become experts, scientists, and managers in their trained field.

PART III: TRAINING PROGRAM CONTENT

Note:One credit is equivalent to 50 hours of student-standard learning, including time spent observing lectures, guided learning, self-study, research, experiences, and participating in tests and assessments; for classroom teaching activities, one credit requires a minimum of 15 hours of lectures or 30 hours of practical work, experiments, and discussions, with one classroom hour counted as 50 minutes.
