Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) ranked first in Vietnam in the Teaching criterion in the Times Higher Education Asia Rankings 2022.

On June 1, 2022, Times Higher Education magazine announced the results of the 2022 Asian University Rankings (THE Asia). According to the ranking, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi) is ranked in the 301-350 group in Asia out of a total of 616 higher education institutions participating in the ranking.

Besides VNU Hanoi, four other higher education institutions in Vietnam are also included in the THE Asia Rankings 2022: Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ton Duc Thang University, and Duy Tan University.

To compile and publish the 2022 Asian University Rankings, Times Higher Education used a set of 13 indicators across five criteria groups: Teaching (25%), Research (30%), Citations (30%), Income from Knowledge and Technology Transfer (7.5%), and International Outlook (7.5%). Thus, among the five Vietnamese higher education institutions ranked, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) received the highest rating in the Teaching category (learning environment, 22.3 points), while Ton Duc Thang University and Duy Tan University were strong in Citations. Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) maintained its strength in Income from Knowledge and Technology Transfer throughout its ranking years.

VNU's position and ranking on the THE Asia University Rankings 2022.

In 2022, 616 educational institutions from 30 countries/territories in the Asian region were ranked by THE (an increase of 65 institutions compared to 2021), including 5 Vietnamese institutions in this ranking (Ton Duc Thang University and Duy Tan University were ranked for the first time after THE changed the standardization of ranking indicators).

According to the 2022 rankings, the top 7 are still Tsinghua University (China), followed by Peking University (China) in second place, the National University of Singapore in third, and the University of Hong Kong in fourth, similar to the 2021 rankings. The 8th and 9th positions saw changes for Seoul National University (moving from top 9 in 2021 to top 8 in 2022) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (moving from top 8 in 2021 to top 9 in 2022). Fudan University (China) rose from 11th place in 2021 to top 10 in 2022.

Top 10 higher education institutions in the 2022 Asian University Rankings

In Southeast Asia, Singapore has two universities participating in the ranking, both in top positions: the National University of Singapore ranked 3rd and Nanyang Technological University ranked 5th. Thailand continues to have 17 universities in the THE Asia Ranking 2022; Mahidol University remains the top university in Thailand at 145th in Asia (up from 130th in 2021). Malaysia also added three more universities this year, bringing the total to 18, with the University of Malaya ranking first in Malaysia at 55th in Asia (49th in 2021). Indonesia has 14 universities ranked this year (an increase of 5 compared to 2021). The Philippines has two universities participating in the ranking, with the University of the Philippines ranking first in the Philippines and at 129th in Asia (compared to 84th in 2021).

Previously, in April 2022, Times Higher Education (THE) published the results of its THE Impact Rankings. This ranking uses the pioneering implementation of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a criterion to rank higher education institutions globally. In this ranking, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) ranked 601-800 globally, along with other Vietnamese educational institutions such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ton Duc Thang University, Phenikaa University, and three new institutions that joined the ranking this year: Duy Tan University, FPT University, and National Economics University.

Also in April 2022, the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) educational organization announced the results of its ranking of 51 fields across 5 subject groups of 1,543 higher education institutions worldwide, with approximately 14,000 training programs. In this 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject (QS WUR by Subject 2022), Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continued to strengthen its position in key areas. In addition to the 5 fields that continued to be ranked (with 4 out of 5 fields improving their ranking), VNU had one new field ranked for the first time: Engineering – Electrical & Electronic. In the 6 fields ranked by QS in the QS WUR by subject 2022, including: Computer Science and Information Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace and Manufacturing, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Business and Management Sciences, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has 5 out of 6 fields in the top 500 worldwide – notably, 3 fields: Mathematics; Physics and Astronomy; and Business and Management Studies are all ranked number 1 in Vietnam.
