The training course was organized by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Vietnam Education Publishing House, with the participation of delegates, lecturers, and 50 overseas Vietnamese trainees from 14 countries and territories.
Implementing the major policies of the Party and State in preserving the Vietnamese language, national cultural identity, and promoting the resources of overseas Vietnamese.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized that this year's training course takes place at a particularly significant time, immediately after the Politburo issued Resolution No. 23-NQ/TW dated August 2, 2026, on the work related to overseas Vietnamese in the new situation, and the 33rd Diplomatic Conference was successfully held. According to the Deputy Minister, Resolution 23 further affirms the Party and State's concern for the overseas Vietnamese community, while also setting new requirements for strengthening the community, preserving the Vietnamese language and national cultural identity, and promoting the resources of overseas Vietnamese.
In particular, teaching and learning the Vietnamese language is both a long-term task and a practical way to bring the spirit of Resolution 23 into life; contributing to helping young Vietnamese people abroad understand their roots, nurture their love for their homeland, and strengthen community bonds.

According to Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, this course fulfills the sincere feelings and heartfelt aspirations of overseas Vietnamese, who wish for the Government's support and cooperation in teaching and learning the Vietnamese language, especially for the generation born and raised abroad. This activity makes a significant contribution to building a Vietnamese community abroad that is rich in identity, stable, integrated, successful, united, and always looks towards their homeland.
The Vietnamese language is not merely a means of communication, but also the "soul of the nation, a bridge connecting generations of Vietnamese people wherever they may be." It is a "symbol" forged through thousands of years of glorious history. Preserving and promoting the cultural values, traditions, and language of the nation, and fostering the preservation of Vietnamese cultural identity within the Vietnamese diaspora abroad, has always been a top priority for the Party and the State.
The teachers and volunteers participating in the training program are not only educators, but also noble ambassadors of the Vietnamese language. They are sowing the seeds of love for the Vietnamese language among overseas Vietnamese, families, and communities, especially the younger generation, so that this spread becomes a bond connecting the Vietnamese people, creating a strong solidarity both at home and abroad. Teaching Vietnamese abroad to Vietnamese people is truly a noble mission.

The 2026 training course on Vietnamese language teaching methods for Vietnamese teachers abroad aims to enhance professional capacity, innovate pedagogical methods, and strengthen connections among Vietnamese language teachers in the community.
The program is scientifically and practically designed, taught directly by a team of leading experts in Vietnamese language teaching from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Accordingly, the university's lecturers will provide students with methods for teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese people abroad, how to correct Vietnamese language errors, methods for teaching pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, and practical skills in teaching traditional Vietnamese art forms in Vietnamese language instruction for Vietnamese people overseas. Through the program, students will update their knowledge, exchange experiences, and learn teaching methods suitable for the specific context of each area, contributing to improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning Vietnamese for young generations of Vietnamese people abroad.
A seven-decade-long journey of teaching Vietnamese to foreigners.
As a core and leading institution in Vietnam's higher education system, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has made exceptionally valuable contributions to the entire process of teaching, promoting, and spreading the Vietnamese language and cultural identity to the world. From 2020 to the present, VNU has developed a systematic and decisive investment strategy for its political mission concerning overseas Vietnamese. Pioneering and striving to build training programs and large-scale national and ethnic projects, VNU has left its mark on humanistic education strategy with nearly five years of decisive investment and completion of the "Project to Enhance Online Vietnamese Language Teaching for Overseas Vietnamese." The model of this key project has contributed to transforming academic values into practical applications of science and technology, aiming to effectively serve over 5.3 million overseas Vietnamese.
As a member of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has directly undertaken the mission of "teaching Vietnamese to international students, developing teaching methods, and training high-level interpreters," a mission entrusted to it since 1968 (from the Department of Vietnamese Language at Hanoi University, now the Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi). With 70 years of tradition and 58 years since its establishment, the Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies has become one of the most prestigious institutions in Vietnam for teaching Vietnamese to foreigners.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thien Nam - former Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language (now the Department of Linguistics and Vietnamese Studies), University of Social Sciences and Humanities, was awarded a commemorative medal for his significant contributions to teaching the Vietnamese language to Vietnamese people abroad.
From 2012 to 2020, the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, successfully completed six key projects that contributed significantly to the international Vietnamese language training system. These included: successfully compiling the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, applicable nationwide and in many countries; successfully compiling the format for Vietnamese language proficiency assessment tests based on the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, applicable nationwide and in many countries; systematically and professionally developing a training program for Vietnamese language teachers for foreigners; training Vietnamese language teachers for overseas Vietnamese for the Government (over 10 courses with thousands of teachers from many countries around the world) and effectively meeting the demand for training Vietnamese language teachers for overseas Vietnamese in accordance with the spirit of Resolution 36 of the Politburo; and being the lead institution for the project to strengthen online Vietnamese language teaching for overseas Vietnamese. Successfully compiled the Vietnamese language teaching framework for Vietnamese people abroad based on the Vietnamese language proficiency framework for foreigners (part of the project "Improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning Vietnamese for Vietnamese people abroad," Decision No. 14/QD-TTg, dated January 6, 2017).
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has been closely associated with the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese for over a decade in the cause of teaching Vietnamese to overseas Vietnamese. In August 2024, at the Fourth World Conference of Overseas Vietnamese, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in recognition of its significant, outstanding, and exemplary contributions to the work related to overseas Vietnamese.
