“The role and mission of the National University in the era of national development” is the theme of the 2024 Annual Conference jointly organized by Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City on December 7, 2024.
The conference was held to summarize cooperation activities in 2024 and discuss and agree on key cooperation contents in 2025. This year's conference was hosted by VNU.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Member of the Party Central Committee, Director of VNU-HCM City and Professor, Dr. Le Quan, Director of VNU-Hanoi co-chaired the conference.
Attending the conference were Mr. Vu Thanh Mai, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Former Member of the Party Central Committee, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council; Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Yem, Director of the Institute of Non-Traditional Security, School of Management and Business, VNU, Former Director of the People's Police Academy; former leaders of the two National Universities through the periods and heads of member and affiliated units, leaders of the Office and functional departments of the two National Universities.
Director of VNU Le Quan affirmed that the most important breakthrough solution for the development process in the new era is science and technology and high-quality human resources.
In his opening speech at the conference, VNU President Le Quan emphasized the mission and role of the National University in the era of national development. Since its establishment, the Party and State leaders have prioritized and focused all resources on developing a multidisciplinary and multi-field training and scientific research center that reaches the world's advanced level to serve as the locomotive and core for the entire education and training system, human resource development, and cutting-edge scientific and technological research to serve the cause of sustainable development of the country. After 30 years of construction and development, VNU and Ho Chi Minh City National University have always adhered to that mission and increasingly demonstrated their roles and responsibilities in the new era - the era of national development.
VNU Director Le Quan affirmed that the most important breakthrough solutions for the development process in the new era are science and technology and high-quality human resources.
According to the Director of VNU, the way to help today's young generation become the elite generation of the future is to invest in education and training, especially elite university education. Elite university education must aim to develop a team of outstanding experts and scientists at the world level, capable of pioneering in creating theories and scientific methods, mastering and pioneering the development of new technologies, core technologies, and source technologies.
In recent years, with the continuous development process, the attention of the Party and the State, demonstrated through many major and breakthrough policies and guidelines, VNU-Hanoi and VNU-HCM have achieved many achievements and gradually affirmed their importance in the country's education as well as their position on the regional and world education map. With favorable mechanisms, enormous potential of scientists and a spacious development space, the two national universities have enough capacity to play a pivotal, leading role in leading Vietnamese higher education in training high-quality human resources, including developing a team of elite experts.
According to Professor Pham Hong Tung, it is necessary to research and propose outstanding policies and increase autonomy for the two national universities in the new period.
Sharing about the mission and national responsibility of VNU in the era of national development, Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Tung - Former Director of the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Sciences, VNU, emphasized that the two VNUs have made many outstanding contributions, with outstanding stature and quality in science and technology, training, human resource development, and policy consulting. In particular, the two VNUs also directly participate in solving practical problems at the national level, providing undeniable scientific arguments on national sovereignty; advising the Party and the Government on responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing policy advice for economic development, developing high-quality human resources for the country, etc. The two VNUs are the focal points for international academic exchange in the whole country. Therefore, it is necessary to research, propose outstanding policies and increase autonomy for the two VNUs in the new period.

To date, VNU-Hanoi has more than 550 professors and associate professors, more than 1,700 doctors and doctors of science; VNU-HCM has 540 professors and associate professors, nearly 1,300 doctors. The ratio of highly qualified scientific staff of the two VNUs is now gradually approaching the criteria of a research university, including many leading experts, scientists of international level capable of implementing breakthrough research directions, major research programs and tasks.

On the basis of solid basic science, the two VNUs plan to cooperate in building joint training programs on semiconductor technology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, etc. In addition, the two sides will actively coordinate in building training programs in the field of new energy; training high-quality experts for new professions where the country is in need of human resources, such as experts in operating nuclear power plants, experts in operating large international airport complexes, experts for subway systems, urban railways, North-South high-speed railways, etc. These are urgent tasks that the two VNUs must pioneer in training and research to gradually master high technologies that contribute significantly to the development of the economy and society, contributing to the sustainable development of the country.
