Humanism fosters the tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing education" on the new path.

Wednesday - November 20, 2024 03:23
Radiant smiles, proud eyes, and best wishes were conveyed to generations of teachers and staff of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, at the rally celebrating Vietnamese Teachers' Day, contributing to further nurturing the tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing education" throughout its 80-year history.
The rally celebrating Vietnamese Teachers' Day on November 20th was honored to welcome generations of former school leaders, retired teachers, lecturers, staff, students, and alumni. The school was also honored to receive congratulatory flowers from leaders of ministries/departments/agencies, and domestic and international organizations.
Humanism on a new path
"With sincere congratulations and gratitude to the generations of former leaders of the school, former teachers, lecturers, and staff members, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan - Secretary of the Party Committee and Rector of the school - happily shared:This year's Vietnamese Teachers' Day celebration at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was truly heartwarming, thanks to the impressive achievements across all areas of the University's work..
This includes the improvement of the school's organizational structure; the smooth operation of the system; the strong growth in both the quantity and quality of the scientific staff, with over 80% holding doctoral degrees and over 20% holding professor and associate professor titles; and the increasingly professional, friendly, and efficient administrative staff.
The Board of Directors respectfully congratulates and expresses gratitude to the generations of former leaders and teachers of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities throughout the years.
The university respectfully congratulates Professor Dr. Phung Huu Phu - former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee, former Chairman of the Hanoi City People's Council, and the first Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - on being honored as an "Outstanding Citizen of Hanoi" in 2024.
The 2024 enrollment targets were met and exceeded across all programs. More importantly, the quality of the applicants was very high, with the entrance scores for the university's 28 majors among the highest in the country, and the total student body approaching 12,000. Training organization was formalized, training management was centralized, and student support was professional.
The training program harmonizes the integration of existing and newly developed curricula; to date, 100% of training units offer all three levels from bachelor's to doctoral degrees, and have begun developing international training programs in line with new trends; promoting international internships for students, attracting international students to short-term and long-term programs; fundamentally establishing a culture of quality assurance throughout the university to maintain its reputation and enhance its standing both domestically and internationally.
Scientific activities continue to flourish, both in terms of the number of publications domestically and internationally, and the university's national and international standing continues to be strengthened. The university's facilities are increasingly modern and convenient for teaching and research; financial resources are growing steadily according to the philosophy of "diversifying revenue sources - savvy spending," providing a solid foundation for scientific investment, improving facilities, and increasing staff income.
In 2024, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was honored to have four faculty members recognized as professors and associate professors by two interdisciplinary professorial councils, including: Prof. Dr. Lai Quoc Khanh, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Hung (Interdisciplinary Professorial Council of Philosophy - Political Science - Sociology); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Phuong Anh, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Hoai Giang (Interdisciplinary Professorial Council of Culture - Arts - Physical Education and Sports).
The school leadership congratulated the four teachers who were recognized by the State Council of Professors as meeting the standards for the titles of Professor and Associate Professor in 2024.
However, the university is also facing increasing pressure. Trends in higher education both domestically and internationally are changing rapidly and significantly; changes in the philosophy governing the training programs within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) mean that disciplines in the social sciences and humanities are no longer the "exclusive" domain of the university but have been partially "opened" to other units within VNU, as well as private and international universities.
The pressure for university autonomy means financial autonomy in a context where the budget is steadily decreasing while the base salary coefficient is increasing too rapidly, and tuition fees are only being raised gradually; competition in student recruitment along with competition to attract human resources from international and private universities…
In the context of the rapidly changing landscape of higher education both domestically and internationally, a higher education institution that fails to adapt or adapts slowly faces the risk of falling behind extremely quickly; a decline in enrollment, training, and research will lead to a loss of scientific reputation and ultimately a loss of social standing.
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized:"We strive to act, not to retreat, to work together so as not to bring shame to our predecessors, to honor the tradition of the Faculty of Literature - the essence of the University - and to elevate the Humanities in this new era."
Over the past decades, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has proudly contributed to the country – in addition to general fields – valuable policy advice and exceptional scientific human resources in Archaeology, Ethnology, Sino-Vietnamese Studies, Linguistics, and Vietnamese Studies… In the coming period, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities needs to continue to be a leading institution in its unique and distinct “specialized fields,” such as: philology, classical studies, and unconventional classical languages closely related to the historical, cultural, and national development of Vietnam, such as Sanskrit studies, Latin studies, Spanish studies, Portuguese studies, and French studies… alongside traditional Sino-Vietnamese studies.
Furthermore, modern interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary training and research programs that contribute to solving pressing national issues such as international integration, an aging society, and ethnic and religious conflicts should continue to be developed and promoted.
"Forever a grateful humanism; Steadfast in an academic humanism; Promoting an integrated humanism; Determined to build a prosperous humanism; Creating a unique and distinct humanism."This is the message that Principal Hoang Anh Tuan conveyed to all teachers and staff members of the school.
Extending his congratulations to all faculty and staff of the university, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan expressed:For the Faculty of Humanities to achieve those accomplishments, every staff member and employee of the University needs to strive to balance professional development with...new"Fostering empathy, demonstrating the courage to think outside the box, take action, and assume responsibility…for the benefit of the industry and the sustainable development of the school."
