New trends in international relations since the beginning of the 21st century and their impact on Vietnam.

On the morning of May 22, 2026, within the framework of the Social Sciences & Humanities Week – SSHWeek 2026, the Faculty of Politics and International Studies of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities organized an international scientific conference on the theme “New Trends in International Relations from the Beginning of the 21st Century and their Impact on Vietnam”. The conference attracted the participation of numerous scientists, experts, lecturers, students, and those interested in the field of international relations.

Attending the workshop were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong - Vice Rector of the University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Chieu - Head of the Faculty of Politics and International Studies, along with many experts from Vietnam and abroad.

In her opening remarks at the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong emphasized that the world since the beginning of the 21st century has witnessed unprecedented profound changes: strategic competition between major powers is becoming increasingly intense, traditional and non-traditional security challenges are intertwined, while digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and climate change are fundamentally altering how nations interact with each other. In this context, Vietnam needs to continue promoting proactive international integration, maintaining strategic autonomy, and enhancing its capacity to adapt to global changes.

The highlight of the conference lay not only in its scale and the presence of many prestigious international scholars, but also in the depth of the academic exchanges revolving around issues shaping the current international environment. From the US-China rivalry, the role of multilateralism, the shifting world order to technological geopolitics and the impact of disruptive technologies, the presentations contributed to painting a picture of an increasingly multipolar, complex, and unpredictable international landscape.

The conference highlighted the increasingly important role of interdisciplinary research in the field of international relations today. Issues such as technology, the environment, energy security, and global health are no longer confined to a single discipline, but require multi-faceted approaches and the ability to connect knowledge across various fields.

The workshop was chaired by Prof. Dr. Hoang Khac Nam, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Dr. Le Lena, VinUni University.

Associate Professor Dr. Dang Dinh Quy, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, shared his views on the challenges facing multilateralism and Vietnam's role in current multilateral mechanisms.

Associate Professor Dr. Thai Van Long, Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy, discusses at the conference.

Professor Robert S. Ross from Boston College shared insightful perspectives on US-China relations online with Vietnamese scholars.

Associate Professor Visvaldis Valtenberg from the University of Latvia shared Europe's experience in dealing with new technological challenges and offered some suggestions for ASEAN.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Hoa, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies, commented on the rise of China and the Vietnam-China relationship.

Dr. Le Phuong Hoa, Deputy Director of the Asia-Pacific Research Institute, commented at the conference.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, former Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Communist Party of Vietnam, shared his views on some major trends in the 21st century and their practical policy implications for Vietnam.

Dr. Arkadiy Eremin from VinUni University shared insights on the changes in the new world order, emphasizing the trend of power shifting towards a new bipolar system from the perspective of Realism.

In conclusion, delegates and scientists alike highly appreciated the academic and practical significance of the conference in creating a space for dialogue, academic exchange, and research networking on contemporary international issues. Through this activity, the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies in particular, and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in general, continue to affirm their role as one of the leading units promoting research and academic networking in the field of political science and international relations in Vietnam.
