The project spanned five years (from 2019 to 2024) and brought together numerous researchers and students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the French Institute for Advanced Studies (EPHE), and the Institute of Han Nom Studies (Vietnam Academy of Science).Commune (Vietnam Association). The project's managing agency is the French Institute for Advanced Studies, and the agency involved in project management in Vietnam is the Francophone University Organization (AUF).
Professor Philippe Papin (Project Leader)
The project aims to analyze and process rubbings of thousands of donated stone inscriptions erected in Vietnamese villages from the 16th to the 20th centuries. These inscriptions, carved in both Chinese and Vietnamese characters, offer new insights into the history of religion, beliefs, economy, and social structure in rural Vietnam.
In addition to in-depth historical research, including monographs on offerings related to village shrines, the Vietnamica Project also focuses on processing all transcribed stelae using digital humanities technology.
Over the years, numerous research programs, seminars, publications, and postgraduate training have been implemented in a coordinated manner, yielding many impressive results. To further promote the Vietnamica Project and take it to a new stage of development, with the support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of France and Vietnam, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, and the French Embassy in Vietnam, Professor Philippe Papin will be working in Vietnam under the auspices of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities from January 2023 to the end of 2024.

On February 2nd, 2023, Rector Hoang Anh Tuan and leaders of various departments received and discussed matters with Professor Philippe Papin on the occasion of his visit to the university for the two years 2023-2024.
Within the framework of the project, in addition to the research and publication activities of the lecturers, approximately 10 students and doctoral candidates in the fields of Sino-Vietnamese Studies, Archaeology, History, etc., received Vietnamica scholarships (over 100 million VND/student) to study at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
