Prof. Philippe Papin (Project Manager)
The project aims to analyze and process the printed copies of thousands of steles erected in Vietnamese villages from the 16th to the 20th century. These steles, engraved in Chinese characters mixed with Nom characters, have opened up new perspectives to outline the history of religion, belief, economy and social structure in rural Vietnam.
In addition to in-depth historical research, including monographs on offerings related to village worship sites, the Vietnamica Project also focuses on processing the entire cascade of stele texts using digital humanities-related technology.
In recent years, many research programs, seminars, publications, postgraduate training... have been implemented synchronously, with many impressive results. In order to promote activities to bring the Vietnamica Project to a new stage of development, with the support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of France and Vietnam, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, the French Embassy in Vietnam, Professor Philippe Papin will work in Vietnam under the auspices of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities from January 2023 to the end of 2024.

On February 2, 2023, Principal Hoang Anh Tuan and leaders of units received and discussed work on the occasion of Professor Philippe Papin's coming to work at the School for two years 2023-2024.
Within the framework of the project, in addition to the research and publishing activities of lecturers, about 10 students and PhD students majoring in Han Nom, Archaeology, History... have received Vietnamica scholarships (over 100 million VND/student) to study at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
