Prof. Dr. Mai Ngoc Chu was born in the year of the Ox in a family with a tradition of studiousness and revolution in Dong Vinh village, Vu Vinh commune, Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province. His grandfather, Mr. Mai Van Tong (Mr. Khoa Tong - affectionately called by the locals), was a Confucian scholar famous for his kindness and love for students. His father, Mr. Mai Huu Trung, was a revolutionary who was loyal to the Party, filial to the people, extremely upright and honest. Inheriting the precious virtues from his grandfather and father, from a young age, Mr. Mai Ngoc Chu was famous for being hard-working, studious and good at studying.
But the path of study and career of Professor Mai Ngoc Chu was not as smooth as that of his contemporaries. In the bookFate and SpiritualityRecently published (Hong Duc Publishing House of the Vietnam Lawyers Association, 2013), he "revealed" to readers about the 5 harsh challenges he had to go through... The book has been received by readers nationwide "with unconcealed delight" according to the words of cultural linguist, Professor, Doctor of Science Tran Ngoc Them.

Answering our question: "Which project left the best impression on you?", he said: "Each project has a beautiful memory, but the most memorable is probably the organization and publication of the book series.Vietnamese Homelandfor overseas Vietnamese, for which he was appointed by the Ministry of Education and Training as the editor-in-chief. The book series consists of 18 books, including 6 textbooks, 6 exercise books and 6 teacher guides. What he feels most satisfied with is that the book series not only reaches overseas Vietnamese in Europe (France, Germany, ...), Asia (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, ...) but also reaches the state of California in the US, including Orange County, which is considered a "hot spot" because the situation of overseas Vietnamese there is quite complicated. In 2008, he and the editorial team had to go to California in a "secret" way to train overseas Vietnamese there on how to teach Vietnamese. The trip was a complete success.
When asked about the most memorable memory in his teaching career, he told us many interesting stories, the most impressive of which was the special affection of foreign readers and teachers for him when they used the Vietnamese language teaching books he compiled. He said: once when participating in an international conference on Vietnamese studies, suddenly a Western girl ran up to hug him and exclaimed: "Oh my god, you are Mr. Chu, right? I live in Saint Petersburg, Russia, for many years I have been teaching Vietnamese according to your books". He really did not expect that in such a faraway country, there would still be people who admired and loved him so much.
