About the speaker

Dr. Sylvie Fanchette is research director at the Institute of Research for Sustainable Development (IRD), France. Her main research interests include the forms and dynamics of urbanization in Asia; adaptation strategies to climate change, environmentally induced migration and vulnerability of populations in densely populated deltas in Asia; relations between cities and rural areas, migration and the collection and recycling of urban waste in artisanal settings.

Since 2014, she has been the research director at IRD. She is conducting research on waste collection, recycling and migration in Hanoi, in collaboration with the Hanoi Architectural University. She is the author of numerous research papers, book chapters and co-editor of several works, including Hanoi, A Metropolis in the Making: the Breakdown in Urban Integration of Villages (Petit Altas Urbain, IRD Publishers, Marseille, 2016).
