Tuesday - September 26, 2023 08:36
Meticulously and seriously compiled, with a simple and unpretentious writing style, the timeless lessons about creativity, willpower, and the courage of a writer remain highly relevant and attract readers' attention. From the first page to the last, readers will feel the message sent to journalists and future generations: every profession requires passion and dedication.
Towards the 100th anniversary of the birth and development of Vietnamese revolutionary journalism, and to honor the contributions of veteran journalists to this valuable journalistic legacy with profound theoretical and practical value, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the National Political Publishing House have compiled and republished the book series "Time and Witnesses" (Memoirs of Journalists), edited by Professor Ha Minh Duc (editor-in-chief) and a team of authors over more than 10 years, overcoming many difficulties and hardships. With three volumes and more than forty articles, the series portrays the portraits of seasoned, unsung journalists who have contributed to shaping the face of Vietnamese revolutionary journalism.

Forty-three journalists are featured in the book series "Time and Witnesses," the majority of whom worked during the period before the August Revolution of 1945, extending through the resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism. This was a difficult and arduous period, filled with sacrifices and losses for the entire nation, but also a glorious period, shining brightly with revolutionary heroism.
Volume I introduces the portraits of 13 journalists: Quang Đạm, Xích Điểu, Tô Hoài, Lê Kim, Trần Kư, Trần Lâm, Trần Công Mân, Vũ Tú Nam, Đỗ Phượng, Hữu Thọ, Xuân Thủy, Lê Bá Thuyên, and Hà Xuân Trường. Here we encounter Quang Đạm, a man of profound learning who dedicated his life to journalism; Xích Điểu, with his many bittersweet memories from over 60 years in the profession; and Hữu Thọ, whose reflections on the profession he summarized as "living with life and dedicating one's life to information and evaluation"... All of them are passionate journalists, wholeheartedly devoted to their work, full of courage and responsibility, and willing to face difficulties and challenges.
Following the author's flow of emotions, with the articles introduced in Volume II, readers are intrigued to discover the portraits of 16 journalists: Thanh Châu, Trần Bạch Đằng, Hà Đăng, Hồng Hà, Thanh Hương, Trần Kiên, Lưu Văn Lợi, Nguyễn Thành Lê, Hồng Lĩnh, Hiền Nhân, Hữu Ngọc, Phan Quang, Huỳnh Văn Tiểng, Hoàng Tùng, Hoàng Phủ Ngọc Tường, and Nguyễn Minh Vỹ. Through the portraits of these journalists, readers will gain a "heartfelt," diverse, and insightful understanding of both theory and practice regarding journalism – a sensitive field related to everyone and every aspect of social life. The lives of the journalists presented are themselves living novels, in accordance with the concept of this genre. They are long stories about individuals whose fates, lives, and loves are intertwined with the fate of the country and the nation, with the formation and development of revolutionary Vietnamese journalism.
Volume III of the book continues to portray the profiles of 14 journalists: Dương Kỳ Anh, Hàm Châu, Trần Đức Chinh, Thái Duy, Bảo Định Giang, Trần Mai Hạnh, Vũ Đình Hòe, Hồ Tiến Nghị, Đinh Phong, Trường Phước, Nguyễn Thành, Nguyễn Phú Trọng, Vũ Tuất Việt, Hồng Vinh… creating a certain complete picture of the revolutionary journalists up to the end of the anti-American war period and the beginning of the reform period.
