This morning, November 2nd, 2009, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a conference of key officials to vote on the nomination of Vice Rectors for the 2009-2014 term. Dr. Trinh Ngoc Thach, Head of the Personnel and Organization Department of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, was in attendance.
The conference heard self-assessment reports on the performance of Associate Professors Pham Gia Lam, Lam Ba Nam, and Vu Duc Nghieu in their roles as Vice Rectors of the University during the 2004-2009 term. The speakers at the conference unanimously agreed that the Vice Rectors had successfully completed their assigned tasks, demonstrating dedication, a high sense of responsibility, and exemplary ethics and conduct in their lives.

Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Secretary of the Party Committee and Rector of the University - on behalf of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors, introduced the prospective candidates for the Vice Rector position for the next term. Accordingly, the prospective Vice Rectors include three individuals: Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu - in charge of finance, administration and facilities; Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Kim Son - in charge of undergraduate training and student affairs; and Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim - in charge of scientific research, postgraduate training and international relations.
The conference continued by hearing presentations from the nominated personnel outlining their proposed directions and work programs for the upcoming term, and also discussed and provided feedback on these reports.
At the end of the conference, delegates proceeded to vote on the candidates nominated.
Here are some of the key points in the work program of the prospective candidates for the position of Vice Rector:

Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu affirmed that he will carry out the assigned tasks with dedication, sincerity, and the highest sense of responsibility. Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu's work program for the 2009-2014 term is expected to focus on the following main tasks:
+ Firstly, continue to monitor and ensure transparent and compliant financial management, thereby contributing to the effective operation of the school; and find ways to increase revenue for the school.See a summary of the work experience of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Kim Son stated:I will do my utmost, with the highest sense of responsibility as a Party member, to contribute to fulfilling the mission of the University, to maintain its leading position in the country in training in social sciences and humanities, to bring the University to the level of prestigious universities in the region, and to effectively serve the cause of industrialization and modernization of the country and international integration."
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Kim Son believes that, for the university's undergraduate training, the first requirement is to ensure that all stages, from student recruitment and training organization to graduation, are conducted in accordance with regulations. Furthermore, the university needs to continue innovating its training thinking, from the structure of disciplines to the organization and management of training; comprehensively and thoroughly implement the credit-based training system; innovate teaching methods, enhance learning materials, textbooks, and lectures; develop and train students in dual majors and major-minor majors, expanding some majors and specializations to international standards; maintain and expand international joint training programs; develop training programs that anticipate the needs of the labor market; strengthen the articulation between different levels of education, and leverage the achievements of research projects in training.
Regarding non-formal education, although this is not a priority for development at Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, it remains an important area of training. The guiding principle for this type of training is: not to chase after quantity, to manage all stages well: student recruitment, training organization, and output, avoiding over-reliance on certain disciplines and faculty members in those disciplines. A key point to note for non-formal education is the need to consider reasonable ratios related to the number of students trained annually to meet societal needs; to maximize the positive aspects of credit-based training applied to this type of training, but paying attention to its specific characteristics; to actively implement distance learning for many disciplines within the university, and to develop short-term certificate courses to serve societal needs.
Regarding student affairs, the report emphasizes two key points: continuing to standardize and modernize student management, strengthening the connection between the training and student management departments; and enhancing the monitoring of students' work after graduation, maintaining close ties between alumni and the university, thereby strengthening the university's power and influence.

In his report, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim affirmed his desire to contribute to the collective efforts of the school. To further enhance the scientific standing of the University, contributing to building an academic environment and training a team of young scientists with excellent professional skills and dedication to their profession."
The report emphasizes a key task for the school in the coming period: to continue developing several major, key research projects that contribute to solving fundamental problems facing the country's development; to organize and implement several pioneering and cutting-edge research projects to affirm the school's position and academic style; and to train and cultivate the research and professional capabilities of the staff, especially young staff, through scientific research activities.
Regarding postgraduate management, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim believes that it is necessary to adhere strictly to regulations, organize systematically, but with a more humane and professional approach. In particular, the university and its units need to develop focused research directions for each discipline to adapt to the current level and trends of training and research in the region; and to build and develop multi-generational research groups to facilitate the transmission of experience and research methods, as well as to refine the theoretical framework and major research objectives.
Regarding international relations, the University needs to realize the content of signed agreements through specific cooperation programs and strengthen relationships with partners. International collaborative research projects should also be prioritized; and the exchange of knowledge and scientific research for students, trainees, and staff should be further promoted.
