Discussing issues of Vietnamese history and Digital Humanities from a scientific perspective by two French professors at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU

Within the framework of the Vietnammica project, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) welcomed Prof. Marc Bui and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pascal Bourdeaux from the French Institute for Advanced Study (EPHE) to work and give a series of presentations on the topic "Vietnamese History and Digital Humanities: Revisiting and Using Historical Sources".
Attending the meeting were Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, leaders of faculties/departments under the school/functional offices, such as the Faculty of History, Faculty of Information - Library, Department of Religious Studies, and the Office of Cooperation and Development.
The presentation attracted the participation of scientists, postgraduates, students and pupils from the Faculty of History, Faculty of Information - Library, Department of Religious Studies - University of Social Sciences and Humanities; Institute of Han Nom under the Vietnam Academy of Sciences, Hanoi National University of Education.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU highly appreciated the scientific value of the contents in the presentation series as well as the enthusiasm of the two professors for scientific exchange activities with lecturers and students of the school.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan said that digitalization in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities is a major policy of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. This policy has received high consensus from scientists, staff and lecturers of the school, especially the cooperation of international organizations and scientists, including the Vietnamica project funded by the European Research Council, of which VNU-USSH is one of the three strategic members of the project.

The series of presentations by two professors at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities from May 29, 2023 to June 2, 2023 revolve around topics such as: historical sources and archives, classical methods and modern tools; data and methods of digital humanities computing, ancient and modern religious sources in Asia and Europe; computer-assisted transcription of historical documents; research on documents related to Vietnam: Auberet's correspondence, Journal of the Indochina Studies Association (BSEI).
The presentations received enthusiastic discussions from scientists, researchers, students, postgraduates and students attending.
 
 
 
 
The presentation series received attention from many scientists, researchers, and students of VNU-USSH as well as many other research institutes and universities.
Vietnamicais a historical research project and digitization of Vietnamese stele documents funded by the European Research Council (ERC); Professor Philippe Papin (Vietnam Studies Expert at the French Institute for Advanced Studies - EPHE) is the Project Manager. The project's governing body is the French Institute for Advanced Studies and the project management agency in Vietnam is the Francophone University Organization (AUF).
The project lasts for 5 years (from 2019 to 2024), bringing together many research experts and students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU; the French Institute for Advanced Study (EPHE) and the Institute of Han-Nom Studies (under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) in a large area including Vietnam, France and several other European countries.
Vietnamica aims to research the history of Vietnamese offerings through steles, digitize Vietnamese social science documents archived in Europe and Vietnam; participate in training graduate students and doctoral students; establish an electronic library, translate and publish monographs and comprehensive research on the history of Vietnamese offerings.
The project aims to analyze and process the printed copies of thousands of steles erected in Vietnamese villages from the 16th to the 20th century. These steles, engraved in Chinese characters mixed with Nom characters, have opened up new perspectives to outline the history of religion, belief, economy and social structure in rural Vietnam.
In addition to in-depth historical research, including monographs on offerings related to village worship sites, the Vietnamica Project also focuses on processing the entire cascade of stele texts using digital humanities-related technology. Over the years, many research programs, seminars, publications, postgraduate training, etc. have been implemented synchronously, with many impressive results.
