Congress Theme: Upholding the essence and traditions of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers"; loyalty - unity - exemplary conduct - innovation; building a clean and strong Association organization; excellently fulfilling the Association's political tasks, contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolution of the Party Congress of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi for the 2015-2020 term.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Chi Hoa, Chairman of the University's Veterans Association for the 2012-2017 term, presented a report summarizing the Association's activities during the past term and outlining the direction and tasks for the 2017-2022 term.
The report evaluating the implementation of the Resolution of the 4th Congress (2012-2017 term) of the University's Veterans Association clearly highlighted the commendable achievements of the Association in all aspects. The Veterans Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was established on December 22, 2001. Upholding the spirit and courage of the soldiers of Uncle Ho, the members of the University's Veterans Association are always role models for the younger generation to follow in all political activities, teaching and research, as well as daily life. Currently, the Association has 38 members operating in 7 branches, including 4 professors, 26 associate professors, 1 PhD, and 2 masters. Members of the Association participate in numerous research projects in the fields of social sciences and humanities, provide policy advice, and address key national issues, such as compiling the National History, and developing online Vietnamese language teaching projects for children of overseas Vietnamese. Many research works by veterans of the Vietnam War provide a scientific basis and arguments contributing to the summarization of the process of building, protecting, and developing the country. Between 2012 and 2015, all members published 50 books, led many state-level research projects, and won awards in science and technology.
The School's Veterans Association has been exemplary and proactive in building the Party organization, the government, and the Association's organization from the grassroots level to the City level. It has successfully completed its tasks in building the Association in areas such as political ideology, organization, personnel, inspection and supervision, and participation in critical feedback; innovating content and methods, and improving the quality and effectiveness of the Association's activities. The School's Veterans Association deserves to be a core socio-political organization, a reliable support for the Party committees and government of the School.
The direction and tasks set forth by the Association for the 2017-2022 term are: actively participating in building the University of Social Sciences and Humanities into a leading research-oriented university in the country in social sciences and humanities, making a significant contribution to the cause of industrialization, modernization, and national defense. Regarding implementation measures, emphasis will be placed on actively innovating, diversifying, and maximizing development resources, mobilizing collective strength, and upholding individual responsibility and role in fulfilling assigned tasks.

The congress acknowledged many heartfelt and insightful contributions from members, especially those that were very much "in the spirit of a soldier".
Associate Professor Pham Thanh Hung (Faculty of Literature): “The Veterans Association receives profound attention from the Party Committee and the University's Board of Directors. Trips to historical sites, exchange programs, and celebrations of major events such as April 30th, July 27th, and December 22nd are supported and organized solemnly by the University, and are especially warm and friendly. We have a long-held wish that we haven't been able to fulfill yet: to erect a memorial plaque for the student and faculty martyrs of the University who went to war to defend the country, right within the University campus.”
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Ba Thanh (Faculty of Literature): “The University's Veterans Association has accomplished many things. However, we need to express the veteran character more clearly. How can we promote the fighting spirit of soldiers so that the role and character of the Association's activities do not overlap or blend with other socio-political organizations? That is the spirit of social critique, warning against and fighting against manifestations of social decline and negativity, for the development of the collective and society.”

Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang (Department of History)
Professor Vu Minh Giang (Faculty of History): "Each veteran needs to preserve the following qualities: Courage (bravery, decisiveness, willingness to face challenges, willingness to take responsibility), Perseverance in overcoming difficulties, and Comradeship. The Veterans Association should be an environment where we can together preserve, cultivate, and promote these qualities, for what purpose in peacetime? To set an example for the younger generation. The stories, memories, mementos, and experiences of the lives of intellectual soldiers should be preserved and passed on through more programs and publications, like those the Association has already published. Regarding the construction of a memorial for martyrs, we need to propose to the leadership of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, to plan a concentrated area, a sacred space within the overall construction project in Hoa Lac."
Associate Professor Ngo Dang Tri (Faculty of History): "The ideology and name of the Association should be changed to further expand the number of members, including the younger generation who served in the military during peacetime. The current number of members is gradually decreasing, which we are partly happy about because our country no longer has young people fighting on the front lines; but expanding the membership base is also to contribute to spreading and promoting good values and qualities, creating a solid foundation for the younger generation, and at the same time, innovating the activities of the Association and strengthening the new vitality of the new era."

Colonel Pham Van Thuong – Deputy Head of the Organizing Committee of the Hanoi City Veterans Association
On behalf of the Hanoi City Veterans Association, Colonel Pham Van Thuong - Deputy Head of the City Association's Organizing Committee - spoke at the congress: "The Hanoi City Veterans Association has 253,000 members. Veterans associations at all levels play a crucial role in the system of socio-political organizations, serving as a core force in the task of building and protecting the Party and government, and carrying out political tasks at the grassroots and local levels. We are very pleased with the opinions of the members of the School's Veterans Association on how to promote the unique characteristics of the Association. Members of the School's Veterans Association carry out training, scientific research, and also serve as a unit advising the Party and State on strategies for developing high-quality human resources to serve the cause of national construction and defense. The Hanoi City Association acknowledges the achievements that the School's Veterans Association has made over the past 15 years, commending the great and special contributions of an organization that brings together intellectual soldiers." awareness in the process of protecting, building, and developing the country."

Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Rector of the University
Professor Nguyen Van Kim, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Rector of the University, delivered a congratulatory speech to the Congress and expressed his gratitude to the University's Veterans Association: "From the preparation work to the Congress program, the spirit and working style of the Association have been very serious, a tradition and a valuable value of the Association. The Congress of the University's Veterans Association, held at the same time as the Youth Union Congress and the University's Trade Union Congress, are prominent events that the Party Committee and the University's Board of Directors pay special attention to. The Association's activities and achievements are very diverse. The Association's members are educators, scientists, and managers... in all these aspects, they have created a very high prestige and position. I am deeply moved by the frank and sincere opinions expressed at the Congress. The heartfelt opinions, with their groundbreaking significance, are always absorbed and incorporated into the current policies and guidelines of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors. A particularly important point is the spirit of camaraderie." "Comrade [name] is embodied throughout all the activities of the Association, like a flame, a pillar of trust that the Party Committee and socio-political organizations in the School expect and absolutely believe in. The School's Traditional Room has been newly built, with the most prominent position being the area honoring the heroic martyrs." Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim expressed his gratitude to the Central Committee of the Vietnam Veterans Association and the Hanoi City Veterans Association for their attention, guidance, recognition, and well-deserved awards given to the School's Veterans Association.

Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim and Colonel Pham Van Thuong congratulated the Executive Committee of the Veterans Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi for the term 2017-2022.
