
The Phan Huu Dat Award Fund was established in 2011, based on an initial donation of 100 million VND by the late Professor, Doctor, and People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat. Each year, the Fund awards 15 scholarships (worth 1 million VND each) to students in the Anthropology major – formerly the Ethnology major (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) who have achieved high academic and scientific research results. To date, the Fund has awarded 54 scholarships, including 50 for undergraduates, 1 for doctoral students, and 3 for postgraduate students.

The Deputy Head of the Faculty of Anthropology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Truong Giang, received the donation and expressed gratitude to the family of Professor Phan Huu Dat for their generosity towards generations of students, trainees, and doctoral candidates, as well as for the development of the Faculty and the field of Anthropology. The Phan Huu Dat Award will continue to be presented to students, trainees, and doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Anthropology at the opening ceremony of the new academic year. The award will contribute to inspiring and promoting the spirit of learning and research among students.

Professor Phan Hữu Dật (1928-2019) was born in Thanh Lương village on the Bồ River, Thừa Thiên Huế (now Thanh Lương village, Hương Xuân ward, Hương Trà town, Thừa Thiên Huế province), a region rich in cultural traditions, poetry, scholarship, and revolutionary spirit.
For over half a century, he dedicated his entire life and passion to Vietnamese ethnology and anthropology. Professor Phan Huu Dat, a People's Teacher, made exceptionally important contributions and had a profound influence on the formation and development of modern Vietnamese ethnology. He was the first Vietnamese person to compile a textbook.Fundamentals of Ethnology(1973) served as research and teaching material at universities nationwide for over 30 years. From the late 1990s, he continued to support and promote the transition from Ethnology to Anthropology in Vietnam to better meet the requirements of regional and international integration. In his final years, Professor donated his entire vast library to the Department of Anthropology and founded the Phan Huu Dat Award Fund.
