Practical learning journey of students majoring in Archival Studies at the Historical Archives Center of Hoa Binh province

On April 11, 2025, the Department of Archival Studies and Office Administration (directly the Department of Administration - Documentation - Archival Studies), University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi coordinated with the Center for Historical Archives of Hoa Binh province to organize a field trip and extracurricular study for 53 students majoring in Archival Studies.

Being able to touch time-stained documents and listen to the stories behind each archive, the trip is an opportunity for students majoring in Archival Studies to approach the reality of archival work from the management and preservation process to exploiting the value of archival documents. The activity is part of the training orientation that combines theory and practice, helping students hone their professional skills and better identify career opportunities after graduation.

Experience in managing and promoting the value of archival documents

During the field trip, the two sides coordinated to organize a seminar on "Sharing experiences in managing and promoting the value of archival documents at the Hoa Binh Provincial Historical Archives Center". Here, students and lecturers had the opportunity to directly exchange with the leaders and officials of the Center about their professional experiences, from collecting, editing to preserving documents, thereby providing a clear and vivid perspective on the reality of archival work.

Speaking at the seminar, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Duc Thuan - Head of the Department of Administration - Documents - Archiving, Faculty of Archiving and Office Management expressed his sincere thanks to the Center for Historical Archives of Hoa Binh province, and emphasized that "In the bachelor's training program in Archiving, we always focus on theoretical training in the lecture hall combined with field trips and surveys. This is one of the meaningful activities organized by the Faculty of Archiving and Office Management this school year." 

Mr. Pham Ba Kien - Director of the Hoa Binh Provincial Historical Archives Center shared the advantages and difficulties in the process of carrying out archival work at the Center.

Mr. Pham Ba Kien - Director of the Hoa Binh Provincial Historical Archives Center shared: Currently, the Hoa Binh Provincial Historical Archives Center manages more than 1,000 meters of document shelves, of which about 70% (equivalent to 700 meters of document shelves) have been digitized to serve the work of searching and exploiting more effectively. He also said that there are currently 256 agencies and units in the province that are sources of submitting archival documents to the Center. In the coming time, the Center will continue to promote the collection, preservation and promotion of the value of archival documents, while enhancing the application of technology to better serve the needs of research, study and administrative management.

Experience Storage Space – A Close-up Look at Future Careers

After the seminar, teachers and students of the Faculty of Archival Science and Office Administration visited the archives of the Hoa Binh Provincial Historical Archives Center, listened to the methods of document preservation and the process of exploiting and using archival documents at the Center.
 

Students not only get to observe the systematic archival process with their own eyes, but also listen to authentic professional stories – where each page of archived documents is not simply a piece of paper but also a memory, a history that needs to be preserved with both knowledge and passion. From the challenges of preserving long-standing documents under strict conditions, to the journey of digitization to “revive” the value of documents in the technology era, every sharing gives students a sharper view of the career they are pursuing.

Explore local cultural and historical heritage

In addition to professional learning activities, students also had the opportunity to visit the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant - a symbolic project of the Vietnamese electricity industry. Here, they experienced the journey through the tunnel leading to the generators located underground in the mountain, visited the Century Letter as well as offered incense at the Memorial of 168 Soviet and Vietnamese cadres, workers and experts who sacrificed their lives during the construction of the project.

The trip ended at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, where students explored more traditional cultural colors of the 54 ethnic communities, enriching their learning experiences outside the classroom.

Not only an extracurricular activity, the field trip to Hoa Binh truly became a valuable career experience journey, helping students majoring in Archival Studies become more confident in their choices and passions!
