Since she was a young girl in elementary school, Mai Phuong has had a burning passion for history. "I've always longed to learn about the past, and my mother often bought me history books," she excitedly said.
Mai Phuong is fascinated by the stories of our ancestors' resistance against foreign invaders, and the historical figures associated with the wars to protect the homeland such as the Trung Sisters, Lady Trieu, Ngo Quyen, Ly Thuong Kiet, Tran Hung Dao, Nguyen Hue... In addition, this 2004-born girl is also passionate about learning about famous cultural figures such as Doan Thi Diem, Nguyen Du, Nguyen Trai…
The motto that Mai Phuong cherishes most is: "Our people must know our history, to understand the origins of our Vietnamese nation."
Growing up, Mai Phuong enthusiastically explored and read many books about Vietnamese history, world history, and famous figures. "Each page, each word, felt like a journey of discovery, taking me on a journey to uncover the vivid pieces of the past, the people and events that contributed to shaping the identity and glorious history of our country," the student emphasized.
Undeniably, every field of study has its own challenges. "Reading history is one thing, but actually studying and researching history is completely different." A female history student also went through a difficult period and once considered "just studying quickly to graduate."
For Mai Phuong, history is not just the past, but the foundation for the future.
Mai Phuong shared: "Initially, I thought that studying history at university would be just like in high school, mainly about memorizing. However, the field of Historical Sciences - one of the fundamental social sciences - requires much more analytical and scientific thinking."
Mai Phuong didn't miss the opportunity to learn from her teachers.
But it was her love for history that motivated her to continue striving. Mai Phuong began trying her hand at scientific research under the dedicated guidance of her lecturers. “I was fortunate to have her dedicated help and guidance in writing conference papers. She never criticized my work, even though it had many shortcomings. Gradually, my confidence increased, overcoming my initial feelings of inferiority,” Phuong confided.
According to Mai Phuong, most people find history dry and difficult to learn because it requires memorizing precise numbers. Speaking about some tips to make history less dry and challenging and easier to understand, Mai Phuong suggests that young people apply three learning methods.
Female students from the Faculty of Humanities win numerous scholarships related to their history major.
First, create mind maps and diagrams. This will help learners organize information more logically and easily. Some presentation formats that Mai Phuong suggests prioritizing include: event diagrams, timelines, or diagrams showing the relationships between characters.
Secondly, use diverse learning materials. Mai Phuong emphasized: “Don’t just rely on textbooks. You can look for other learning materials such as reference books, documentaries, articles, YouTube videos, or podcasts about history. These materials can help you grasp knowledge in a more vivid and engaging way.”
Finally, connect history with real-life stories. “When studying history, try to relate historical events and figures to specific stories or real-life contexts. This helps you visualize and remember events more easily,” the third-year student advised.
Phuong stated: “Studying history not only provides us with a rich treasure trove of knowledge about Vietnam's history and culture but also opens the door to exploring the world. Furthermore, historical knowledge helps us broaden our horizons, develop critical thinking, and improve our analytical skills.” Therefore, every Vietnamese citizen has a responsibility to learn about and appreciate history, drawing practical lessons to contribute to the country's future.
For Mai Phuong, these volunteer trips to the highlands not only bring joy and encouragement to the people in need but also help her grow as a person.
Not only is Mai Phuong excellent in her studies, but she also actively participates in community activities, enriching the history of youth. She has served as Deputy Head and a member of the Organizing Committee in various charitable programs in mountainous regions such as "Towards Quang Tri," "Warm Spring in the Border Region," etc. In addition, she has assisted 12th-grade students with their graduation exam preparation, participated in blood donation drives, and many other meaningful activities.
