First of all, please allow me to send to the delegates, to the Board of Directors, teachers, and all students my congratulations on the occasion of the opening of the 61st school year of the school. I wish that our entire school will teach well, study well, and reap a SUCCESSFUL school year and a GREAT SUCCESSFUL course.
Now, I would like to say a few words to the new students, the new students of the 61st class.
Prof. Dr. Vu Duong Ninh speaks at the opening ceremony of the school
Dear children,
Exactly 60 years ago, also on those beautiful autumn days of Hanoi sky, there were young men and women in their late teens and early twenties, surprised and hesitantly stepping on the steps of the majestic university building at 19 Le Thanh Tong. This is the main campus of Hanoi University, one of the five new universities established after the resistance war against French colonialism. That was the first class of our school, and the students at that time, today are in their eighties or so.
I was fortunate to be one of them, after graduating from university, I stayed at the Faculty of History as a lecturer and retired at the age of 70. Thus, I have been attached to the school for exactly half a century, and after retirement, I have continued to be attached to the school, until today, for another 10 years and hopefully many more years. Therefore, I am very proud of our University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU. And I would like to take this opportunity to outline a few features of the school's traditions so that you, the new students of the 61st course, understand that you have become members of a long-standing university with a very proud tradition. I would like to mention the following 5 points:
1.Outstanding and consistent throughout the existence and development of our School ispatriotic tradition, ready to sacrifice for independence and unity, to protect the sacred sovereignty of the territory and territorial waters of the Fatherland. The first generation of professors of our school were patriotic intellectuals, who, following the call of the Fatherland and the inspiration of Uncle Ho, devoted their whole lives to the cause of education and scientific research in two arduous and dangerous wars of national salvation. Following in the footsteps of their fathers and brothers, many generations of cadres and students in the 1960s and 1970s enthusiastically set out on the journey "Splitting Truong Son to save the country", contributing to the liberation of the South and the unification of the country. The dedication and sacrifice with the example of heroic martyrs such as Le Anh Xuan, Chu Cam Phong and many other lecturers and students have built eternal monuments and are the pride of generations of cadres, civil servants, employees and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities today.
2.As a major scientific institution of the country, enduring tradition of reaching scientific heightshas deeply penetrated the minds and aspirations of generations of teachers and students, deeply imprinting the academic spirit of the School. The professors of the first generation and the following team of scientists have devoted all their intelligence and efforts to researching issues related to society and humanities, leaving behind many famous works of theoretical and practical significance. It can be said that in every stage of the School's development, there have emerged works of great stature, addressing issues related to national traditions as well as solving problems that have been and are being raised in the country's development process. Those scientific products are valuable assets contributing to the country's knowledge treasure, leaving lasting values for today and tomorrow.
3.Achieving the above two things is the result oftradition of inheritance and continuous connectionbetween generations of teachers and students. Over the past 70 years, young students, researchers, and lecturers have diligently studied the works of previous generations of scientists, both absorbing and continuing, and supplementing and improving many scientific arguments to form "wave of knowledge"continuous succession and development. The development of many faculties and departments in the School is a concrete result of the spirit of inheritance, continuous succession, without interruption, without loss, creating very basic conditions for the long-term, almost endless scientific journey of our School.
4.Since its establishment, foreign relations have been emphasized, mainly with major universities of socialist countries such as Lomonosov University, Beijing University, Humboldt University, etc. When the Doi Moi period came, the door to foreign relations opened wide, the international relations of the University developed strongly, in addition to socialist partners, the University and its faculties quickly opened contacts with universities in France, Germany, the US, Japan, Australia, China and many schools in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and many other continents. Up to now, the number of countries and schools having relations with our University has increased dramatically. Students from many countries have come to study at our University and our students and staff have been trained from many countries. That creates a unique feature.tradition of international integration, bringing results in many fields of training, research, scientific exchange... It is very clear that today, international integration is an essential requirement to create very important intellectual resources for the development of Vietnamese social sciences and humanities.
5. Finallyhumanistic tradition, as the name of the School. 70 years of construction and development have left a deep impression on the human relationship between teachers and students, between generations, between the School and society. Therefore, the University of Social Sciences and HumanitiesHe has gained the trust of society, not only in terms of academic content but also in terms of lifestyle, behavior in communication, in all relationships of life. It can be affirmed that it is the humanistic tradition that has created a healthy, pure educational environment and thereby led to success in promoting the above traditions.
Dear ladies and gentlemen,
Generally speaking, the traditions of our School today are the inheritance and crystallization of the glorious traditions of the Party and the entire nation, and in turn, as a training and research institution on Social Sciences and Humanities, we must constantly promote and spread them in society, propagate and nurture them in the souls of the next generations, creating an invaluable and endless resource to build the future of the country, contributing to bringing freedom and happiness to our compatriots as President Ho Chi Minh wished.
Reviewing the fine traditions of the School, we express our gratitude to the previous generations of teachers who laid the foundation stones for today's university; to the soldiers and compatriots, including many lecturers and students of our School who contributed their blood and bones in the struggle to protect the independence and integrity of the country so that we can teach and study peacefully in the classroom, integrate into social life and integrate with universities around the world.
With deep gratitude to our seniors and heavy responsibility for the future, all students of Class 61, let us vow to work together to continuously develop.Human Will,Humanistic Spirit and Humanistic TraditionIn just 4 years, you will complete the course, be proud that you have studied and grown up here and will continue the glorious tradition of our school, UNIVERSITY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES - VNU.
