Students need to be creative and bold in scientific research.
This was a statement by Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, at the University-wide Student Scientific Conference for the academic year 2011-2012, held on May 19, 2012.The conference heard 20 of the most outstanding scientific reports presented in 4 subcommittees: the Subcommittee on History - Political Science - Oriental Studies - International Studies; the Subcommittee on Philosophy - Psychology - Sociology - Anthropology; the Subcommittee on Tourism Studies - Journalism and Communication - Management Science, Information - Library Science; and the Subcommittee on Literature - Linguistics - Archival Studies & Office Administration - Vietnamese Studies and the Vietnamese Language. In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh devoted considerable time to discussing the importance of student research in promoting the quality of training and research in the university environment. In his exchange with the students, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh stated that many major scientific works sometimes originate from seemingly simple initial scientific ideas. Many professors have developed their doctoral dissertations from their own research topics while still students. Many students have discovered their research abilities and passions from their very first attempts at participating in the student scientific research movement. Therefore, students should actively and confidently participate in scientific research with a spirit of openness, creativity, and boldness, as this is a great opportunity to hone their research skills, professional competence, and many other skills. In the 2011-2012 academic year, the entire university had 709 student scientific research projects submitted to the competition from the departmental to the faculty level, attracting more than 1,000 students. This year, student scientific research activities have many outstanding features. The number of students participating in scientific research is increasing, and research activities are taking place evenly across all departments, faculties, and affiliated departments of the university. The quality of the research projects reflects the solid foundation of knowledge acquired through training and the students' passion for research. The research projects not only delve into the fundamental theories of the field but also address many practical and current issues serving the needs of society in all areas such as journalism and media, tourism, social work, psychology, management science, etc. To achieve these results, all units from the University, faculties and departments to the supervising teachers have worked together in close coordination to create the best conditions for students and aim for the quality of output of a leading research university.
