Vietnam - East Asia Cultural Exchange

During 3 days (May 15-17, 2012), nearly 70 delegates from more than 10 countries attended and discussed 21 reports (12 reports by international scholars and 9 reports by Vietnamese researchers) at the workshop "Vietnam - East Asia Cultural Exchange: Viewed from the perspective of social history and anthropology". The main contents discussed included: Socio-economic changes in Vietnam in the ancient and medieval period under the impact of regional trade exchanges; Receiving technology, religion, ideology and culture in Vietnam through regional exchanges; Vietnamese people's maritime thinking through the study of works by scholar Le Quy Don; Reform ideology in Vietnam in the context of the East Asia region through the case study of the Nguyen Dynasty's royal examinations; Vietnam's position in the cultural flows of ethnic groups in the East Asia region; Religious and belief issues in Vietnam in the context of the East Asia region... In his closing speech at the workshop, Prof. Ho Tai Hue Tam (Harvard-Yenching Institute) and Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Minh (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) emphasized the great scientific achievements during the 3-day discussion, and committed to continue to coordinate in-depth scientific activities in the coming time. For many years, the Harvard-Yenching Institute of Harvard University has been an important scientific and training partner of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). The Institute has received many staff from the University to teach and research, and coordinated in-depth scientific activities in the United States and Vietnam. This conference is one of those regular scientific activities.
