Anthropology Presentation: “Spirit in Cambodia”

On September 30, 2019, Dr. Paul Christensen from the University of Göttingen (Federal Republic of Germany) gave a presentation on "Spirit in Cambodia." This was a topic he had researched for many years and was also the subject of his doctoral dissertation, which he recently defended at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology (University of Göttingen).

Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Hong Hai chaired the presentation. Attendees included Dr. Frank Proschan – a Fulbright scholar currently teaching at the Faculty, Dr. Philip Taylor – Honorary Professor at the Australian National University, along with scientists from Germany and faculty, researchers, and postgraduate students working and studying at the Faculty of Anthropology.

Dr. Paul Christensen is from the University of Göttingen (Federal Republic of Germany).

The presentation sparked lively discussions among the participating scientists, raising numerous issues related to religion and religious change in contemporary society. Dr. Paul Christensen provided compelling evidence through new theoretical approaches and methodologies.

In the afternoon of the same day, Dr. Paul Christensen attended a lecture on "Ritual Theory" for students of the Religious Anthropology class, taught by Professor Dr. Dinh Hong Hai. Dr. Paul Christensen's lecture was actively discussed by the K61 Anthropology students, with presentations from three groups on ritual topics in Muong, Vietnamese, and San Chay cultures. The presentations by the K61 Anthropology students were conducted directly in English.

The presentation was attended by humanities scholars from foreign universities.

Dr. Paul Christensen highly praised the English presentation skills of the K61 students and was extremely impressed by their confidence. He shared: “This has been a wonderful experience for me with anthropology students in Vietnam; you truly have enormous scientific potential for the future.”

Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Hong Hai, on behalf of the Faculty of Anthropology and the K61 anthropology students, thanked Dr. Paul Christensen for the knowledge he shared with the young people and expressed a desire for more collaborative programs between the two universities. Dr. Paul Christensen also expressed his wish to continue cooperating with the Faculty of Anthropology through future projects.

During the regular series of scientific seminars of the Faculty of Anthropology at the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year, many scientists from Germany, the United States, France, and Australia participated in vibrant scientific activities at the Faculty of Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
