Summary of the 4-day aptitude test at Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

From May 30th to June 2nd, 2015 (with June 3rd, 2015 as a contingency date), Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) will organize the first aptitude test of 2015, using the results for admission to VNU's training programs.

As of the end of June 2nd, 2015 – the last day of the exam as scheduled – according to statistics from the Hanoi National University Admissions Steering Committee, the total number of candidates present for the exam was 43,369 out of 45,350 registered candidates, accounting for nearly 96%. In 9 clusters with 21 exam locations nationwide, after 8 exam sessions, a total of 9 candidates were disciplined or suspended from the exam for the same offense of bringing mobile phones into the exam room; a total of 119 candidates had to be moved to the next exam session, accounting for 0.27%, and only one candidate in Nghe An had to be moved to the next session due to health reasons, which was promptly assisted by medical staff serving the exam. Candidates who made mistakes during the exam or experienced computer problems were all moved to the next session, mostly concentrated in the 3 exam clusters in Hanoi. In the exam clusters in Nghe An, Da Nang, or Thai Nguyen, the number of candidates who had to be moved to the next session was very low.

Preliminary calculations of candidate scores at 5 examination centers including Hanoi University of Industry, Hong Duc University (Thanh Hoa), Vinh University (Nghe An), Da Nang University of Architecture, and Thai Nguyen University (Thai Nguyen) show that, out of a total of 10,337 candidates, 72.8% achieved 70 points or higher (out of a total of 140 points); two candidates achieved the highest score - 125/140 points - at the examination centers in Nghe An and Hanoi.

No officials were found to be in violation of regulations or subject to disciplinary action; nor were any security incidents. Across the seven localities, no examination centers experienced power outages, server problems, or network issues. No examination sessions were suspended or rescheduled due to technical reasons. Of the total 7497 computers mobilized for use (both official and backup), only a small number experienced operational errors.

Comprehensive aptitude assessment is an advanced admissions method applied in many major education systems around the world. This method aims to ensure the selection of candidates with strong academic abilities, logical thinking, reasoning skills, and the ability to synthesize and analyze knowledge, etc.

The reform of admissions through competency assessment at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is a groundbreaking and necessary solution, demonstrating VNU's pioneering role in implementing Resolution 29 on fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training.

The aptitude test is conducted by Hanoi National University in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Education and Training as part of the roadmap for reforming student testing and assessment.

Based on the results of the first aptitude test, it can be affirmed that this is an initial success of Vietnam National University, Hanoi in its efforts to reform examinations towards greater objectivity, accuracy, fairness, transparency, convenience, reduced costs, and less pressure on candidates, their families, and society as a whole.
