At the meeting, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan listened to Professor Salil Bose share his experience in setting up and implementing distance learning. As someone who has promoted online training courses at Nanyang Technological University, Professor Salil Bose considers this an inevitable trend in university training. Distance learning brings convenience to both teachers and learners, through the bridge of the Internet. Teachers do not need to attend classes directly but will design programs and monitor the learning process online. In addition, students can discuss lesson content with each other and with teachers through online platforms such as chat rooms. Online training also bridges the geographical distance between students from different countries and cultures.
However, Prof. Salil Bose also said that advantages come with difficulties. For example, online teaching means that teachers will not have direct contact, making it difficult to maintain long-term interaction with students. Students also have to get used to learning through multiple-choice tests and online questions; therefore, they need to be more proactive. In addition, to maintain an online learning management system, it requires a certain cost and a team of skilled technicians. Currently, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore is operating platforms such as the Online Education Management System (OEMS), the Learning Activity Management System (LAMS).
On behalf of the University, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his gratitude for the sharing of Professor Salil Bose. Currently, some of the University's staff use simple platforms such as the Learning Management System (LMS) to teach their courses. The Vice President proposed to organize some seminars and workshops to further popularize distance learning to the staff in the University. Professor Salil Bose and the staff of Nanyang Technological University will participate and support these activities.
