During the meeting, Associate Professor Hoang Anh Tuan listened to Professor Salil Bose share his experience in establishing and implementing distance learning. As someone who has promoted online training courses at Nanyang Technological University, Professor Salil Bose considers this an inevitable trend in university education. Distance learning offers convenience for both teachers and students, through the internet. Teachers do not need to attend classes in person; instead, they design programs and monitor the learning process online. Furthermore, students can discuss lesson content with each other and with teachers through online platforms such as chat rooms. Online learning also bridges the geographical distance between students from different countries and cultures.
However, Professor Salil Bose also noted that advantages come with disadvantages. For example, online teaching means that teachers will not have direct contact, making it difficult to maintain long-term interaction with students. Students also have to get used to learning primarily through online quizzes and questions; therefore, they need to be more proactive. In addition, maintaining an online learning management system requires certain costs and a skilled technical team. Currently, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is operating platforms such as the Online Education Management System (OEMS) and the Learning Activity Management System (LAMS).
On behalf of the University, Associate Professor Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his gratitude for Professor Salil Bose's insights. Currently, some faculty members are using simple platforms such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) to teach their courses. The Vice Rector proposed organizing several seminars and workshops to further disseminate information about distance learning to the university's staff. Professor Salil Bose and staff from Nanyang Technological University will participate in and support these activities.
