On November 29th, the first Southeast Asian Regional Psychology Conference, themed "Human Happiness and Sustainable Development," opened at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. This was the first International Psychology Conference held in Southeast Asia, a collaborative effort between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and the Institute of Psychology (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences), in partnership with the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), the International Commission on Surveying (ITC), the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP), the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and the Chinese Psychological Society (CPS).

This is an opportunity for Southeast Asian and international psychologists to exchange academic knowledge, share experiences, and contribute to the development of psychology in the region and internationally, in accordance with the culture, economy, society, and history of each country and nation, with the aim of making people happier and society more sustainable.

The workshop also helped to enhance the role and increase the contribution of psychology in social life; improve the capacity of Vietnamese psychologists in particular, and Southeast Asian psychologists in general, through training courses on modern psychological research/practice techniques, methods, and theories, relevant to practical requirements.

Professor Pham Quang Minh delivered the welcoming speech at the conference.

Speaking at the conference, Professor Pham Quang Minh, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, stated:

"The more developed society becomes, the more social problems we face. Solving these problems doesn't always require sufficient policies or administrative measures. Even the most effective administrative measures cannot solve the current socio-psychological issues."

To address such problems, we need more professional, high-quality, and highly qualified psychologists. Therefore, it can be said that psychologists are the most important "social doctors" for treating the most serious illnesses of society.

The conference attracted leading psychologists from 35 countries around the world.

After 30 years of reform, Vietnam, having emerged from war, has developed into a middle-income country and achieved great success in economic development. However, many social problems remain. Without addressing these human-related issues, other values become meaningless.

As President Ho Chi Minh said: "Nothing is more precious than independence, freedom, and happiness." Since 1995, as a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Vietnam has committed and strived to build the ASEAN community, a community for the people, and to work towards a "caring society."

“Over the past three years, Psychology has been one of the top choices for applicants to our University. I hope and believe that cooperation between the Vietnamese psychology community and the region and the world will be strengthened and enhanced to build a more stable and prosperous world,” shared Professor Pham Quang Minh.

The diverse discussions at the workshop revolved around questions related to human well-being, health, and sustainable development in various contexts, fields, and environments, within the ever-changing diversity of cultures and societies.

Delegates from various countries pose for a commemorative photo in the hall where the official opening session of the conference took place.
