Conference of civil servants and public employees and review of the 2019-2020 school year.

On the morning of August 18, 2020, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a conference for its staff and faculty to summarize the 2019-2020 academic year, with the participation of 190 delegates from the university's staff and faculty. The conference was held online to comply with the directives of the Prime Minister of Vietnam regarding social distancing and COVID-19 control.

Attending the conference were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Huong (Chairman of the Trade Union of Vietnam National University, Hanoi), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hieu (Secretary of the Party Committee of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities).

The conference heard Professor Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Rector of the University) present a summary of the Report on the Summary of the 2019-2020 academic year and the Plan of tasks for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The Presidium of the Conference

Over the past year, the University has implemented numerous activities to improve the quality of education. Regarding regular undergraduate training: in 2019, the total number of applications for admission to the University was 39,980, an increase of over 10,000 compared to the total number of applications in 2018. The percentage of graduating students with excellent academic performance remained stable at 48% compared to the same period last year. The number of students graduating early from 2016 up to the first batch of 2020 was 225. Regarding postgraduate training, the University recruited 348 master's students, achieving 87% of the assigned target, and 50 doctoral students, achieving 100% of the assigned target; organized thesis defenses and awarded degrees to 456 master's students and 100 doctoral candidates.

Professor Pham Quang Minh delivered the opening remarks at the conference.

The application of information technology in teaching and learning activities has been increasingly enhanced, with 815 course modules taught online during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 400 lecturers received training in the application of information technology in teaching.

Also during the past year, the University completed the development of three new training programs in Cultural Studies, Korean Studies, and Vietnamese Studies taught in English; developed a Master's program in Journalism and Communication Management and began enrollment in the first round of 2020; and completed the development of one high-quality International Studies program.

Regarding scientific research, in the 2019-2020 academic year, despite the significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the University successfully organized 10 scientific workshops/conferences, including 5 international scientific workshops; implemented 47 research projects at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi level, and 21 research projects at the University level. The University's staff published 15 monographs and textbooks, including 2 monographs published in English; published 350 research papers in the State Council for Professor Titles' scientific journal catalog; and 50 international works (9 articles in the ISI/Scopus system and book chapters published by reputable international publishers). The University also successfully organized the annual scientific conference for young staff and postgraduate students, as well as the scientific conference for undergraduate students.

Professor Hoang Anh Tuan presented the Report summarizing the 2019-2020 academic year and the plan for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Regarding cooperation and development, the University continued to sign and renew 12 cooperation agreements with international partners; and continued to effectively implement international cooperation programs and projects such as TOURIST, a project funded by the KAS Institute (Germany) for international scientific conferences. Currently, there are 48 foreign lecturers participating in teaching and research at the University; the number of students from the University who have gone abroad for study, exchange, and cultural exchange is 133; and the number of staff members who have gone abroad for study, exchange, and research is 188. The total number of articles published on the University's official website reached over 1,000, with a series of articles focusing on the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Significant progress has also been made in areas such as personnel organization, planning and finance; administration and general affairs; quality assurance; inspection and legal affairs; political and ideological work, emulation and commendation, student affairs, and national defense and security.

In 2019-2020, the University identified key tasks such as: reorganizing and restructuring majors and specializations; continuing online teaching and learning activities towards standardization, synchronization, and quality; summarizing the Scientific Research Orientation for the period 2010-2020 and developing the Scientific Research Orientation for the period 2021-2030; completing targets for staff development, gradually implementing the staff development strategy for the period 2020-2025; successfully completing the quality accreditation of the Bachelor of Political Science program according to AUN-QA standards and peer review of bachelor's degree programs; increasing the proportion of supplementary revenue; balancing funding sources to ensure that additional income is paid at or above the level of 2019; promoting student support and services; effectively implementing job placement programs for graduates;…

In his keynote address at the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Huong (Chairman of the Trade Union of Vietnam National University, Hanoi) highly appreciated the encouraging achievements of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the past academic year. In the context of many changes in the domestic and international situation, especially before the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the University implemented effective and timely solutions to overcome difficulties and reasonably ensured the achievement of the set targets.

In the coming academic year, the University needs to continue integrating and working together to implement the five key tasks set forth by the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) in the Conference summarizing the work of 2019 and implementing the plan for 2020: developing a Decree and Regulations on the organization and operation of the VNU in accordance with the amended Law on Higher Education; building technological infrastructure to implement the digital transformation orientation in education; continuing comprehensively reforming teaching activities, focusing on the teaching staff; continuing to innovate the management mechanism of science and technology research towards research, experimentation, and transfer to the community; and accelerating the construction progress of VNU's facilities in Hoa Lac.

The conference also heard the Report summarizing the emulation movement in the 2019-2020 academic year and launching the emulation movement for 2019-2020, and the Report summarizing the activities of the People's Inspectorate in the 2019-2020 academic year. The reports received many insightful comments from the school's staff and lecturers.

Delegates followed and participated in discussions, contributing ideas via Zoom Meeting software.

Overall, the opinions expressed were in agreement with the key tasks set out for the new academic year. In addition, faculty and staff also offered suggestions on improving facilities, compiling textbooks, restructuring training programs, and financial autonomy…

At the end of the conference, delegates listened to the Draft Resolution of the Conference of Public Officials and Employees for the 2020-2021 academic year and voted to approve several key targets in the Draft Resolution.
