When asked about her feelings upon learning she was the valedictorian, Thuy Hien shared with joy and pride: “Even now, I'm still very surprised and overwhelmed with happiness knowing I'm the valedictorian of the journalism major. Because when I came to Hanoi, my only goal was to graduate with a distinction, with some knowledge and experience in journalism. But the distinction and the title of valedictorian are truly a huge reward, a testament to my continuous efforts.”
Leaving her hometown to study in a new environment, Thuy Hien inevitably faced difficulties. Finding accommodation in the heart of Hanoi was a major challenge: “When I first arrived in Hanoi, everything was so new and unfamiliar to me, from the houses and streets to the people. For the first two days, I searched for accommodation, forgetting to eat and sleep, but still couldn't find a place I liked. But luckily, the Me Tri Dormitory Management Board provided assistance, and I had a stable place to live for three years. I feel very grateful to the staff of the Management Board for their care and for creating the best living environment for students.”

Besides that, getting used to a new place, new food, and new people with differences in language, perspectives, and lifestyles was also a challenge. The girl from Quang Nam had to change her taste and communication style to adapt to the living environment in the capital: “I remember in the first week I couldn't finish a meal because everything tasted blander and unfamiliar. Or when I tried to talk to some people, they didn't understand what I was saying. Then I learned to adapt, changing my taste, using appropriate language, starting conversations, and understanding cultural norms and communication…”
But perhaps the biggest challenge was studying in a completely different environment, struggling to adapt to new learning methods. However, thanks to determination and family support, Hien confided: “I had to get used to proactive learning, independently searching for and researching study materials, being flexible in transforming the knowledge from different subjects into my brain, applying it to real life, and being proactive and creative when approaching each mid-term and final exam.”
She frankly admitted that she wasn't exceptionally intelligent, but that didn't discourage her: "I don't have a good memory, I'm not very articulate, and I'm not very tech-savvy. So I adopted the motto 'hard work compensates for lack of intelligence' to achieve my goals."

In addition, her dedicated mentor, Professor Phan Van Kien, helped her gain more confidence in scientific research. Especially, her friends and colleagues in Hanoi, with their dynamism, talent, and enthusiasm, contributed to shaping Thuy Hien into a stronger and more mature person.
In her most difficult moments, when homesickness and life's pressures weighed heavily, Thuy Hien always thought of her family – the source of immense encouragement to keep striving. Her family was not only a source of emotional support but also a driving force that helped her understand that pursuing her dreams was not just for herself, but also for her loved ones. In particular, she never forgot to thank herself – the resilient version of Thuy Hien, constantly striving and always reaching towards the light like a sunflower.
She confided that, for her, family has always been the most important support system. “Even though I'm far from home, I always feel the care and concern of my parents and relatives, from simple daily inquiries to strong words of encouragement whenever I face difficulties. My family isn't well-off, but my parents have never hesitated to invest in their children's education. That has become the biggest motivation for me to keep striving.”
She also didn't hesitate to advise young people not to let circumstances dictate their lives. Whether you come from the countryside or a big city, the most important thing is your own willpower and effort. "I believe that everyone will face challenges, but it is from those failures that we grow stronger. The important thing is to set goals, look up to strive for them, and be content with what you have," Thuy Hien said.
