2. Objectives of the training program:
2.1. General Objectives:
This program helps learners perfect their knowledge and skills, enhance their research capabilities in the field of tourism. Upon completion, learners will possess critical thinking, analytical, synthesis, and data and information evaluation skills in a scientific and advanced manner; research, development, innovation, and technology utilization skills in the tourism sector; skills in disseminating knowledge in their specialized fields; the ability to self-direct and adapt to a changing professional environment; the ability to guide others in performing tasks; and the ability to manage, evaluate, and improve to enhance professional performance.
2.2. Specific objectives:
- Specific Objective 1(O1): Provides a practical and in-depth theoretical system of tourism science, focusing on the intersection of sustainable development, human resource management, and business culture. Learners are equipped with a solid foundation of scientific research methods, applied statistics, and public administration, while expanding interdisciplinary thinking in specific fields such as tourism geography, tourism economics, and tourism culture. Based on this, students are able to update advanced trends to evaluate, analyze, and plan development strategies for both the public and business sectors.
- Specific Objective 2(O2): Develop and enhance independent research capabilities, statistical skills, and tourism business or destination management skills at various levels. Learners are trained in professional management and operational skills and the implementation of complex tourism consulting and management projects in practical professional settings. In particular, the program emphasizes creative thinking, the ability to identify and thoroughly solve problems arising in specialized areas such as travel, hotels, events, and project management, aiming to provide innovative solutions for the industry.
- Specific Objective 3(O3): Develop systems thinking and a correct understanding of professional responsibility, maximizing personal ethics, professional ethics, and social ethics in the context of integration. Learners demonstrate self-direction and leadership abilities in carrying out professional tasks and scientific research. At the same time, doctoral students commit to responsibility for community development, preservation of cultural and heritage values, and ensuring sustainability in all tourism management and business activities.
3. Admission Information
3.1. Admission method:
Admission is based on the regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi).
3.2. Eligibility Criteria:
3.2.1. Requirements regarding qualifications and work experience
- Applicants must possess a university degree (or equivalent qualification or higher) in a relevant field, with a GPA of "good" or higher, or have published scientific papers related to the tourism sector. If applicants require supplementary training, they must complete it before applying for admission. Applicants must also have at least one year of experience working in the tourism sector.
- Diplomas issued by foreign educational institutions must undergo recognition procedures in accordance with the current regulations of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
3.2.3. Foreign language requirements
- Possess foreign language proficiency (in one of the following languages: English, Russian, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Thai) meeting the requirements of the training program at level 3 or higher according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam. Foreign language proficiency can be demonstrated by one of the following diplomas or certificates:
+ A university degree or higher in a foreign language; or a university degree or higher where the program is primarily conducted in a foreign language;
+ A university degree or higher awarded by Vietnam National University, Hanoi, within the last two years, where the program's output meets the requirements of Level 3 or higher according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam;
+ A foreign language certificate equivalent to level 3 or higher according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam; or an equivalent certificate issued within 2 years from the date of the foreign language exam to the date of registration for the master's program by institutions accepted by the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
- Applicants who are foreign citizens and register for master's programs taught in Vietnamese must have a Vietnamese language proficiency level of 4 or higher according to the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, or have graduated from a university (or equivalent qualification or higher) where the training program is taught in Vietnamese; and meet the requirements for a second foreign language as stipulated by the training program (if any).
3.2.4. Other requirements
- A clean personal record, not currently serving a legal penalty at the level of a warning or higher, not currently serving a criminal sentence, as confirmed by the human resources department of the workplace or the local government where the individual resides.
- I am healthy enough to study.
- Meet other conditions (if any) as required by VNU, for each admission year.
3.3. List of suitable industries
- This field belongs to the same industry group as Tourism.
- The field of study is defined in the training program standards issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.
- For cases where there are no established training program standards for the corresponding field or group of disciplines, the specialized unit must have a scientific and practical basis, determined by the Scientific and Training Council of the specialized unit and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, to identify the discipline with the closest professional foundation to the training program and determine the corresponding supplementary courses (if needed); report to VNU before enrollment and be responsible for this professional evaluation.
3.4. Projected enrollment size
- According to the quota allocated annually by Vietnam National University, Hanoi (expected to be 30 students/year).
- The detailed admission plan is implemented according to the Admission Regulations, the annual postgraduate admission guidelines of VNU, and the admission scheme of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities approved by VNU (if any).
PART II: LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

2.2. Foreign language proficiency
PLO 8:Proficiently using a foreign language at a level equivalent to level 4 of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam (B2 CEFR) to research professional documents, write scientific reports, and present and discuss specialized issues.
3. Output standards regarding autonomy and responsibility.
PLO 9:To provide expert assessments, recommendations, and advice on professional or occupational activities in the tourism sector.
PLO 10:Adapting to different work environments through proactive learning and continuous skill improvement, the ability to work independently and mentor others, and the ability to evaluate and improve the quality of work in the tourism sector.
4. Thesis requirements
The thesis must apply the theoretical knowledge of the specialized field; analyze, evaluate, solve, and develop the research problem from a practical perspective. The thesis must be relevant and timely; it must contribute to both theory and practice: Theoretically, the thesis must systematize the basic theories on the research problem, or propose some new viewpoints and theories on the research problem. Practically, the thesis must propose directions or specific solutions to help improve state management of tourism and business management of tourism enterprises towards sustainable tourism development.
