10. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

This dissertation is the first study in the country to explore the theoretical basis and methodology for constructing a corpus of English for Sociology textbooks as a foundation for research on English for Sociology. The dissertation successfully developed a TECo-level English for Sociology textbook corpus with a size of 527,408 instances, analyzed 6,531 word groups within the corpus, and identified a core vocabulary of 3,137 word groups used in basic English and English for Sociology. Based on an examination of the vocabulary representation in existing textbooks for teaching and learning English for Sociology, the dissertation highlights the benefits and applicability of the corpus, as well as directions for exploiting the linguistic data in the corpus for English teaching and learning.

This dissertation represents a new research direction, responding to the trend of applying modern technology in foreign language teaching, promoting integration and interdisciplinary collaboration between linguistic research, foreign language teaching, and information technology at a high level, in line with the current trend of scientific and technological development in education.

11. Practical applications:

The research findings of this thesis have high practical applicability. Firstly, the thesis provides a theoretical basis for developing a competency framework for English language textbooks suitable for research and teaching conditions in Vietnam. Secondly, the thesis has presented the principles, criteria, and procedures for designing and constructing the TESoC competency framework in practice to quantify key vocabulary knowledge in textbooks for English language studies in Sociology. The analyses on the TESoC competency framework directly help to adjust teaching knowledge according to vocabulary focus, evaluate textbooks, and support the use of appropriate materials for assessment in testing and evaluation.

12. Further research:

Develop specialized English language competency frameworks to support English language teaching for various professions, tailored to the level and objectives of learning and research. These research findings can be effective tools in language research, teaching, and specialized foreign language learning at multiple educational levels.

10. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

The thesis is the first research in Vietnam studying on corpus building theories to construct a textbook corpus of English for Sociology to study English materials for specific purpose. The thesis has built a textbook corpus of 527,408 tokens and analyzed 6,531 wordfamilies in the corpus and identified the core vocabulary of 3,137 word families served in general English and English for Sociology. On the lexical manifestation in the textbooks used in teaching and learning English for Sociology, the thesis points out the advantages of the textbook corpus and its various applications in exploiting linguistic data in teaching and learning English.

The thesis is a new research with up-to-date approach in accordance with the trend of modern technology application in teaching and learning foreign language. It promotes content integrated and interdisciplinary research in combining teaching foreign languages ​​with high-level technology to catch up with the development of technology in education in the current time.

11. Practical applicability, if any:

The thesis' results can be applied in language research, learning and teaching English as a foreign language. Firstly, the thesis provides basic theories for the construction of a textbook corpus of English for specific purposes in conformity with internal teaching and research conditions in Vietnam. Secondly, the thesis presents the principles, criteria and procedures in designing a textbook corpus, and builds one in reality to quantify the core vocabulary in English textbooks for Sociology. The analysis in TESoC directly helps orient teaching contents to the core vocabulary, evaluate teaching materials and textbooks, exploit linguistic materials of different levels for assessment and testing.

12. Further research directions, if any:

The thesis sets a basis for the construction of many more textbook corpora as well as pedagogic corpora in many fields and of different levels of study. These researches are expected to be an effective tools in teaching, learning and studying the language of English for specific purposes.
