1. Purpose and research objects of the thesis

- The research object of the thesis is the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union (Common Security and Defense Policy-CSDP).

- Research objectives of the thesis: Based on the analysis of the formation process and assessment of the practical implementation of CSDP in the period 2007-2019, the thesis draws out the characteristics of CSDP, assesses the position of CSDP in the regional security structure and examines the movement trend of CSDP.

Policy analysis methods: to analyze the basis of formation, goals and orientation of CSDP;

Historical method:Used by the author to organize information, learn about the history of European security and defense integration and the birth of CSDP.

Methods of synthesizing and processing documents: to analyse the EU's objectives, guidelines and policy directions for CSDP and to synthesise specific activities reflecting the EU's implementation of CSDP;

Comparison method:to point out the similarities and differences between CSDP and other security institutions in the region.

3. Main results and conclusions

3.1. Main results

- Is an in-depth, updated, systematic research work from the perspective of Vietnamese researchers on CSDP in the period 2007-2019.

- Point out the characteristics of CSDP in the period 2007-2019, determine the position of CSDP in the regional security structure and forecast the movement trend of CSDP with a vision to 2025.

3.2. Conclusion

- The motivation for building and developing the EU's CSDP is the issue of power and the desire to build an institution to coordinate political relations between members;

- CSDP was born based on the need to seek "eternal peace" of European countries after the catastrophic consequences and heavy devastation of war;

- Although the CSDP implementation process has achieved some successes, the number of military and civilian missions deployed on the continents is quite large, but the duration is short, the scale is small and capacity is limited;

- The main factors affecting the formation, development and implementation of CSDP are the increasingly complex internal and external security challenges and differences in viewpoints of member countries;

- The CSDP's movement trend until 2025 is still an intergovernmental policy, focusing on crisis management and intra-bloc defense.
